Reducing Your Pet's Cancer Risk: A Holistic Perspective
by Cynthia Holley-Connolly, ONP Staff Writer

The prospect of a cancer diagnosis in our pets is one of the most profound fears we can experience as pet guardians. Cancer is a sadly common occurrence in our cats and dogs, with cancer cases ever on the rise. Despite being common, well-documented and vastly researched, cancer in humans and companion animals is still not widely understood. Why do so many pets get cancer? Why do some animals get cancer and others do not, and what are the causes?

Scientific evidence suggests that factors like genetics, toxic exposure, and stress all may play a role in the development of cancer in pets. Because so many factors can contribute to cancer, it is not possible to pinpoint one cause, or a one-size-fits-all cure. Conventional cancer treatments like radiation and chemotherapy can present other health problems for  pets, and even the best available therapies may only prolong a pet's life, never curing the cancer.

Because cancer is so mysterious and powerful in its ability to destroy health and deplete us emotionally (and financially), many people feel overwhelmed, and take a fatalistic approach to the prevention of cancer. We know so little, and cancer seems to strike us and our pets in such a seemingly random fashion - what is the point of trying to do anything about it?

You can do something however, that will greatly reduce your pet's risk for developing cancer. The key is in understanding a simple fact about the root cause of cancer and applying it in every aspect of your pet's life.

"What can I do to lower my pet's risk of developing cancer?"

Many owners of purebred pets genetically predisposed to cancer and those with malnourished or sickly pets they've adopted are aware of the greater cancer risk that their pets face, but few guardians really know what to do to tip the odds a bit more in their favor. We have outlined some steps to take in our online articles, but to take three quick bites of wisdom, we suggest:

  • Make sure your pet is eating a natural food, with fresh (preferably raw) fruits and veggies as part of the main diet. Even if you feed a natural dry food, add some chopped raw veggies or fruit, or a dehydrated vegetable pre-mix regularly to meals to give your animal a nutrient boost.

  • Include nutritional supplements in your pet's diet that include antioxidants, and some form of greens, which provides trace minerals, amino acids, and essential fatty acids. These nutrients help keep body tissues healthy in the GI tract, respiratory system, skin & blood vessels - all "high traffic" areas where the immune system eliminates disease and damaged cells.

  • Support your pet's immune system with an occasional internal cleansing protocol, using a gentle herbal or homeopathic remedy to help your pet's body eliminate toxins (see last month's Detox Article if you missed it). If your pet does become ill, consult with a holistic vet on the use of an immune support product with nutraceuticals appropriate to help your pet recover.

Burdock (Arctium lappa)Herbal Profile: Burdock

Burdock is another medicinal member of the Sunflower family. It has been used in many herbal traditions since ancient times as a blood cleanser and liver tonic. It is useful for many types of skin disorders (which typically reflect an overload of toxins in the body), as well as kidney & bladder problems, and for joint disease that is inflammatory in nature. Burdock also has mildly diuretic properties, which helps with elimination of waste materials from the body.

Research on burdock has identified compounds it contains that help eliminate environmental toxins like pesticide residue from the bloodstream before body tissues become damaged. Studies suggest that this herb assists the liver in destroying free radicals before they cause cellular damage.

Burdock is both gentle and effective when used long-term as a liver cleanser, and it can greatly benefit pets that have been on a poor diet. Its primary action is supporting the liver, the primary organ for body detoxification, which in turn allows proper digestion and supports overall immune strength.

The long roots of the burdock plant are harvested and are used in various types of herbal remedies. Chopped dried roots are often made into teas or concentrated into tincture formulas, and it is commonly combined with other cleansing herbs. Burdock is found in many products we offer, including: Only Natural Pet Lubri-Herb, B.S.S.T, and Blood & System herbal formulas; Animals' Apawthecary Detox Blend, Constitutional Blend, Organic Green Alternative, and Alfalfa/Yucca Blend; Udo's Choice Pet Essentials Support for Dogs and for Cats; Dr. Harvey's MultiVitamin Mineral & Herbal Supplement, Ortho-Flex and Golden Years powder supplements; PetAlive DetoxPlus, Kidney Support, Immunity & Liver Support and LiverAid formulas; and in our Only Natural Pet Super Daily Greens supplement and Skin Wellness tablets.
