What are the Advantages of Feeding Raw? Our
readers said: 1) Greater vitality, 2) better behavior,
3) health issue improvements, 4) fewer vet visits, 5)
lower stool odor & volume, and 6) longer life.
Greater Vitality - Of all pet parents' responses,
the number one benefit mentioned was improvement in
their companions' overall vitality. Common observations
were improvements in skin, coat, brighter or clearer
eyes, and improved muscle tone. We're often so accustomed to seeing dull coats,
glassy eyes and listless appearance in our adult pets
that we forget that healthy animals in the wild retain
their youthful appearance until quite late in life. When
your pet starts a highly digestible, nutrient-rich raw
diet, the benefits may be obvious in a matter of
days!
Better Behavior - Many guardians also noted
improvements in their pets' demeanor, finding their pets
to be more energetic and playful, more cooperative and
more friendly with other pets.
Healthy pets are happy pets, and animals can't tell us
when their diet is making them feel sick, out
of sorts, or crabby. Once nutritional deficits are
addressed and toxic elements are removed from your pet's
diet, their increased energy and well-being can
bring out their natural joy and allow them to re-engage
happily with you, other pets and family members.
Health Issue Improvements - People often turn to
"alternative health" strategies when conventional
methods fail, and many readers said that they tried raw
food to help resolve specific health issues - very often
with excellent results! Allergies were the most cited
health issue resolved with a raw diet. Other health
issues guardians saw improvement with included urinary
tract and bladder problems, digestive issues, and
liver problems. Many pets on
recurrent or long-term conventional medical regimens
like steroids or antibiotics were finally able to
recover once their diet was upgraded to raw food.
Fewer Vet Visits - Less time at the vet's office
(with fewer dental cleanings!) was a commonly
reported benefit of raw diets. Pets with chronic or
recurrent health issues got better (see above) and
pets
got sick less often with occasional issues like
digestive problems or viruses. Teeth stayed cleaner -
even in breeds prone to dental problems (like Yorkies
and Shi-Tzus). As many pet parents pointed out (and we
agree), it makes sense to calculate the cost of
medications and vet visits into the cost of your pet's
food. Cheap food creates poor health, which means it often
costs less in the end to feed a high quality diet.
Reduced Stool Volume/Odor - Less smell and smaller
stool volume improves overall quality of life for many
pet parents feeding raw diets. Dog parents say waste is
easier to pick up and the yard is less messy and smelly.
Cat guardians especially appreciate less odor in their
kitty boxes! This is a common benefit with pets on raw food
diets, which makes perfect sense. Easy-to-assimilate raw
foods have no fillers or toxic ingredients, which means
your pet's body digests and uses the nutrients with
less effort and much less (stinky) metabolic
waste is produced in the process.
Longer Lives - While no diet can be a magical
"fountain of youth" for a cat or dog, the raw diet comes
the closest. Many pet parents report that they chose raw
food after losing a past companion to poor health they
believed was caused by a conventional diet. They said
that their pets eating raw food look and act younger
than their years, and were alive and vital, living
many years longer than their previous pets that had succumbed to poor health.
Ultimately, people who choose a raw diet for their cat
or dog say that they want the best for their pets, and
know that diet is most often what makes or breaks an
animal's health. Many pet parents spent time
researching the truth about conventional pet food
(See our article, "What
You Need to Know About Your Pet's Food," for more details.). Their research helped
them recognize that raw diets provide what no
conventional pet food can - the vital
minerals, vitamins, enzymes, and many other nutrients
that no other food delivers as well as raw.
Raw diets also present challenges to pet parents, and we got
plenty of feedback on these as well. This report
continues further below with the
Challenges of Raw Food Diets, with tips from
readers and our suggestions on how to overcome them. |

The top Challenges of Raw Food Diets our readers reported
are: 1) time constraints, 2) cost concerns, 3) the "ick"
factor - strangeness & fears about bacteria, and 4) pet
pickiness.
Making
Time - The top reported challenge in feeding raw food is
the time commitment involved. Most say the effort is
worthwhile though, and it doesn't take long to get the
hang of it. Their top suggestion? Plan ahead - from the
purchasing to the thawing, prepping and serving, raw
food requires more thought. How much does your
pet need? How long does it take to thaw in your fridge?
How often do you need to restock food? These questions
take some trial and error to answer, but once you've got
it down, things get easier. Our article, "Raw Food Feeding Guidelines,"
can help answer some of these questions for you.
Cost Concerns - After time issues, the biggest concern
pet guardians reported was budget constraints. This is a
serious concern for multi-pet families or those with
limited financial resources. Some guardians with
multi-pet families said they fed raw to just the most
health-challenged animal. If you can't afford a
full-time raw diet, many readers suggested occasional
raw meals, along with a high quality
kibble or
canned
food. Some people alternate prepared raw food with
dehydrated food mixes, or use a natural
food pre-mix
along with smaller portions of quality meat ingredients
they get from their local grocery store's meat
department.
The
"Ick" Factor - This includes the primitive strangeness
of raw meat, as well as concern about bacteria
contamination. Several readers who expressed these fears
said it had stopped them from trying raw foods. But
other pet parents (even a few vegetarians!) chose to
overcome their fear or distaste and feed raw meat after
researching pet food and deciding that a raw diet seemed
best for their companions. Their advice on the
ickiness? Get over it!
As one guardian suggested, "feeding conventional pet food
is like giving your kids fast food for every meal." When you know what goes into many conventional
pet foods, you'll think raw food ingredients
are a lot less icky! See our article, "What
You Need to Know About Your Pet's Food," for more
details.
As
to concern over bacteria like Salmonella and E. Coli,
consider that there's inherent risk in any raw food -
for humans or for pets. Recent human food contamination
problems include raw spinach, peanut butter, and
countless incidents of meat plant problems with hotdogs,
hamburgers, and other meat products. Raw or undercooked
chicken and eggs cause many cases of Salmonella
poisoning in people each year, and most of us know the
food safety guidelines for handling raw meat, poultry and eggs when
preparing food for our families.
Our favorite way to kill surface
bacteria when preparing raw foods is using
grapefruit
seed extract, which can be used to sanitize pet bowls,
utensils, countertops - and even works as a soak or
rinse on the food itself! Taking basic safety
precautions with food prep and clean up will keep you
and your family safe. Always using safe food handling
practices (and precautions like choosing
stainless steel bowls and
utensils) puts many pet parents at ease about food safety.
So
why can our pets safely eat raw foods that we can't? Their
digestive systems are like those of their wild
ancestors, and are designed to let them thrive on raw
meat while destroying bacteria that would make humans
sick. Our pets' GI tracts are far shorter than our own,
and their stomach acid is stronger to help them destroy
any bacteria they ingest. For more
information on the bacteria issue, please see our article, "The Safety of Raw
Meat Diets."
Pet
Preferences - Some readers said that their pets didn't
care for raw food, while others have been afraid to try
because their pets are picky. Picky pets are a real
challenge and it can be hard to convince older or fussy
pets (especially cats) to try new foods. Cats are
hard-wired to be suspicious of unfamiliar things - from
people to furniture, to food. Many dog breeds tend to
fussiness as well. Our readers suggest that you
persevere - it often takes patience and
experimentation to get a picky pet to switch to a
healthier diet. Check out our article on
