June is a busy month for us at Only Natural Pet Store! Be sure to check out
our events calendar to the right and register for our upcoming events!
Additionally, June is Pet Safety month at Only Natural Pet Store, and to keep
you prepared in the event of minor emergencies, we’ve included some information
below that can help tackle some common situations. Of course, these remedies are
only appropriate if the problem is mild and not directly life-threatening and
our opinion is never a substitute for a certified veterinarian. Always contact
your vet in a serious emergency.
Insect Bites and Stings: Remove stingers, if present. Dab a mixture of
baking soda and water or milk of magnesia on the spot to help reduce discomfort.
To support the healing process, try Dr. Harvey's Healing Cream or Homeopet Healing Cream.
Cutting a Nail Quick: When you've cut a nail too short, stop the
bleeding by pressing the nail in styptic powder or flour and tapping the powder
into the nail.
Poison / Foreign Object Consumption: To induce vomiting in pets, give
the animal household hydrogen peroxide 3% USP by mouth, using a syringe. Pull
the animal’s lips away from the side of the mouth to make a pocket, in which you
will deposit the liquid. It is suggested to use 1 teaspoon per 5 pounds of the
animal's weight, to a maximum of 3 to 4 tablespoons. Before dosing, first give
the animal a little bread or other soft food so there is something to bring up
along with the stomach contents. If he has not vomited after 15 minutes, repeat
the dose of hydrogen peroxide one more time.
Choking: Signs include pawing at the mouth, gagging, gasping,
breathing difficulty, odd neck posture, abnormal gum color (blue, gray, white).
Open the mouth and try to pull out the tongue to check for an obstruction. Sweep
inside with a finger if you cannot see anything. If you see or feel the object,
remove it if you can without causing throat trauma. If you are unable to remove
the obstruction, get to a vet immediately.
Heat Stroke Prevention and Treatment: Heat stroke can be brought on by
activity as well as long term exposure to high heat. The effects can be
devastating. Be prepared with plenty of water during outdoor activities and stay
cognizant of your animal's behavior. Be aware of the following signs of heat
stroke:
- Excessive panting
- Labored breathing that may signal upper airway obstruction
- Bright red mucous membranes in the gums or eyes and/or bright red tongue
- Lethargy and weakness -High body temperature
- Collapsing and seizures, and coma
Emergency Treatment 24-Hour Hotlines:

- National Animal Poison Control Center :

Saturday, June 6th
12:00-4:00 pm
Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue consists of a small group of volunteers that find and re-home rural and some
local Labrador retrievers and Lab mixes. They find their Labs through shelter
volunteers out of state who will alert them to dogs that are about to be put to
sleep. Most of these labs are in "High Kill Shelters" that are almost always
full because they are located in rural areas where the dogs run stray, mating
easily. Please join us in the fight to get more and more dogs adopted and fewer
put to sleep!
