Sixteen
Steps to Detox Your Pet
by Cynthia
Holley-Connolly, ONP Staff Writer
Most likely, you have a general idea
what toxins are. We often hear things described as being
"toxic," and we know that means potentially damaging, and
perhaps poisonous. Toxins can cause, worsen, or accelerate many
health problems in people and pets. Sadly, many of the toxins
that can profoundly affect our pets' health are hidden, and we
may unknowingly contribute to the load of toxins our pets have
in their bodies. While toxins are bad for us, they can be
devastating to our pets for several reasons.
First, pets are generally smaller than we are, with smaller
organs of elimination (e.g., liver, kidneys, lungs). When
exposed to toxins, their bodies have to work much harder than
ours do to eliminate them. Second, pets have a shorter life
span. They don't have the luxury of time that we have for their
bodies to eliminate toxins as gradually. Also, our pets can't
talk to us to let us know when something in their food or their
environment is making them feel sick. They can't switch their
own food or decide to stop using a household cleaner that
irritates their sinuses or lungs. Our pets rely on us 100% to
reduce the number and amount of toxins they encounter.
So what can you do to minimize the toxins in your pets' lives
and help them eliminate the toxic load they have in their
bodies?

"How can I tell whether my pet may
need to detox?"
Many signs of toxin build up are so commonplace in
pets these days that even the most conscientious of pet
parents may consider them to be "normal" and disregard
them. Holistic veterinarians recognize the following
conditions as likely indicators that a dog or cat is
struggling with a toxic overload:
- Foul smelling breath, red gums,
and brown plaque build up on the animal's teeth
- Greasy, oily or dull coat; flaky
and/or foul smelling skin
- Smelly discharge or build-up in
the ears
- Oozing, swelling or redness on
the skin, or chronic discharge from nose or eyes
- Diarrhea, constipation, or
extremely strong smelling urine and/or feces
If your
pet has one or more of the conditions listed above, a
detox regimen may be helpful, but remember that these
signs may also suggest any number of serious health
conditions, so when in doubt, a vet visit is a must! We
suggest that you consult with a holistic vet on how best
to incorporate natural remedies into your pet's health
program. Visit the
American Holistic Veterinary Medicine Association
website to find a holistic vet in your area.

Milk
thistle is a member of the Sunflower family with a long
history of use in herbal medicine. It has been used
worldwide for its liver supportive properties, which are
known to be primarily derived from the high
concentration of silymarin found in its seeds. Silymarin
and its related compounds act as powerful antioxidants
to fortify liver cells against the effects of toxins.
Many studies on silymarin have confirmed that it
supports and protects the liver during times of stress
by increasing protein production and creation of new
liver cells to replace those that have been damaged.
Other studies have confirmed that milk thistle helps
protect the liver from damage from exposure to various
toxins, including amanita (death cap) mushrooms, toxic
chemicals, and potentially harmful drug therapies that
can damage liver cells.
Milk thistle may help pets with liver issues, kidney
issues, and those recovering from microbial infections.
It may also be helpful for secondary autoimmune issues
like tumors and skin problems that may arise following a
diagnosis of a liver condition. Administering milk
thistle before and after anesthesia is a common practice
in parts of Europe, and may be helpful for pets as well.
Consult with a holistic veterinarian to determine how
milk thistle may help your pet.
The seeds are harvested and are used in herbal tinctures
or standardized powder extracts. Therapeutic levels of
milk thistle are not recommended for daily use in the
absence of ongoing liver stress, but may be used
intermittently or occasionally as part of a cleansing or
detoxification regimen. This Herb is found in many
remedies we offer, including: Only Natural Pet
