Winter vs. Summer Pet Care Tips
by Jean Hofve, DVM

It's that crazy time of year here in Boulder, Colorado...a balmy summer temperature one day, and a biting winter freeze the next. We recently had a record high and a record low just three days apart! While you may be in a more temperate climate, it's still a good time to strategize on behalf of our pets in terms of preparing for the next season.

While summer and winter are worlds apart in many ways, they also have quite a few things in common. For example, pets everywhere may prefer to stay indoors in extremes of either hot or cold. And even though the term "holiday" typically brings to mind jingle bells and colorful lights, summer and fall also have their share of potentially perilous events! A little planning will go a long way toward making the whole year safe and happy for both two- and four-footed family members.

Little Big Cat Wins 2011 Muse Medallion Award

We are very proud that Little Big Cat won the coveted 2011 Muse Medallion Award for best website, from the Cat Writers' Association. You may remember a few weeks back that, along with our good friends Ingrid King of the Conscious Cat and Mary Ann Love-Miller of Feline Express, we won a Certificate of Excellence. Then those 3 sites competed for the Big One — the Muse Medallion — and we are so honored that Little Big Cat was chosen the winner among all the amazing competition!

Canine Influenza

Yes, dogs can get the flu, but fortunately not the H1N1 virus that's been getting so much attention lately. Similar to the human form, canine flu is a contagious respiratory disease in dogs which is thought to be a mainly airborne virus, most likely transmitted by an infected dog coughing or sneezing on another. In otherwise healthy dogs, statistics show that the canine flu is a fairly mild disease with most dogs recovering completely in two to three weeks.

Pet Safety Tips

Every pet has three primary needs: a safe place to live, a healthy diet and lots of love. That may sound simple (especially the love part!), but it actually takes some thought and effort to ensure safety and health. Keeping our companions safe depends mainly on common sense, but it also requires being informed about the many potential dangers to our furry friends.

Questions and Answers from the Customer Care Cabin
Question
I have a long hair tabby, who is also an indoor cat. She throws up a lot of hairballs, on average once every two weeks.  Is there anything you would recommend?
Answer

I highly recommend that cats be fed very high quality canned food or raw food to help prevent hairball problems, (no dry food). For more information about diet please see What You Need To Know About Your Pets Food.

I also recommend the daily use of digestive enzymes and essential fatty acids.

Typically this all that is needed to solve hairball problems without having to use any additional hairball remedies. Brushing long haired cats on a regular basis is also important to help reduce the amount of hair they ingest when grooming themselves.

For occasional hairball problems try Only Natural Pet Laxa-Herb Herbal Formula or Pet Naturals of Vermont Hairball Relief Plus.
