Question:
My cat was diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis. Vet said feed her I/D diet+ her meds. She won't eat the food. Can I order Innova EVO. Will this diet be good for her condition?
Thanks, William
Answer:
For William, Chronic pancreatitis in felines is challenging to say the least. First, I would feed a diet that is natural, nutritionally balanced, wholesome and minimally processed. (See What You Need to Know About Your Pet's Food and our Quick Guide to Natural Pet Foods). Also, antioxidant supplements, such as: N Acetylcysteine, and Vitamin E, selenium, and vitamin C as found in Genesis Resources Feline Antioxidant will help protect the liver and pancreas. In addition, a chinese herbal formula: Major Bupleurum (available through a qualified veterinarian), digestive enzymes from a non-pancreatic source such as Animal Essentials Plant Enzymes, Optigest or ProZyme, and probiotics (in addition to any small amount included in a digestive enzyme product) such as NF Spectra or Wysong Pet Inoculant are important in treating and preventing pancreatitis flare ups. There are special blood tests and ultrasound of the pancreas that are recommended to monitor this condition. Best Regards, S M Sanderlin DVM
