Colorado is having a devastating fire season, including the Waldo Canyon Fire, the most destructive in state history. During this tragic event, the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) opened its doors to shelter and feed the pets that were displaced. To thank them for this loving act, we will donate 10% of all sales from this email to the HSPPR to help them restock after helping all of these wonderful pets and help them prepare if this happens again

12 Tips for Hiking with Your Dog

by Jean Hofve, DVM

One of the best things about sharing your life with a dog is always having a buddy available for hiking! But before you hit the trail, here are some tips to keep in mind:

Make sure you're both in shape for your planned hike. The first hike of the season probably shouldn't be 10 miles, uphill both ways! Your dog will follow you anywhere, but he can't tell you when he's getting tired or if his paws are sore. Start with shorter treks to help your pal prepare for more strenuous activities.

Be aware of the laws and regulations in your hiking area. They are there to protect you, your dog, the wildlife, and other hikers. We are fortunate in Boulder to have mountain parks where dogs can be off-leash (as long as they are under voice control). But this is not the case everywhere, though, so please be considerate.

We are fortunate in Boulder to have mountain parks where dogs can be off-leash (as long as they are under voice control). But this is not the case everywhere, though, so please be considerate.

Make sure you have the right collar or harness, and a sturdy leash. Studies have shown that excessive pressure from a neck collar can damage a dog's trachea (windpipe), so a head collar or walking harness may be a better choice for dogs that pull. Small dogs do exceptionally well with supportive harnesses such as the 3-in-1 Vest Harness that also doubles as a secure seatbelt for car travels.

Carry a few clean-up bags, in case your dog gets the urge to eliminate in the great outdoors.

Bring water and a travel bowl for your dog; dehydration can be a serious problem.

Five Fire Safety Tips for People with Pets

We shudder to think about it. But according to the National Fire Protection Association, each year more than 1,000 house fires are accidentally started by pets. As part of National Preparedness Month, we suggest you take a minute to pet proof your home against potential fire hazards—it could mean the difference between life and death for your four-legged friends.

Secure wires and cords.
Cats are especially interested in playing with anything that looks like string. Keep electrical wires and power cords secured and out of your pet's reach.

Blow it out.
Don't leave lit candles unattended. Pets may burn themselves or cause a fire if they knock the candles over. Be sure to use appropriate candle holders placed on a stable surface. Want to be really safe? Consider using only flameless candles.

Cover it up.
Pets are naturally curious and will investigate almost anything that has a scent. This includes your oven. Be sure to remove stove knobs or protect them with covers before leaving the house. Believe it or not, exploring stove tops is the number one way your pet can accidently start a fire.

Go crazy with the detectors.
There is no such thing as too many smoke detectors. In fact, you should have at least one on each floor of your home. Out a lot? Consider using monitored smoke detectors. These systems send an immediate alert to a call center letting them know smoke has been detected.

Stick 'em up.
In the event of an emergency, our pet rescue sticker alerts rescue personnel that animals are inside your home. Write down the number of pets inside and attach the sticker to a front window or door.

Snoopy & Preston's Inspiring Story!

When Snoopy was 6 years old, he was overcome with a genetic disease called Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). Suddenly he became paralyzed from his midsection down. Sadia, his guardian, quickly took action to return his quality of life. Soon afterwards Preston, another Dachshund suffering from IVDD, joined the family.

Hello, I have 2 daschunds. One is 7 yrs old and one is 2. The 7 yr old was just diagnosed with Disc Disease. He is currently being treated with Steroids. We are waiting to see if this works. In the meantime, I have been trying to research some alternatives. Also, I was hoping that there was some kind of Supplement that I could give them to avoid this. I was looking at the product Seven Forests Liquidambar 15. I was hoping that someone could give me some more information on it, like are there any side effects that I should know of and would it help prevent this terrible health problem in my daschunds. Thank you for any information that you can give me.

Hello, Thank you for visiting Only Natural Pet Store.

We suggest the following supplements to support your dog's back health:
Vetri-Science Vetri-Disc
Liquidambar 15 by Seven Forests.

The Vetri-Science Vetri-Disc can be given to the 2 year old to aid in prevention.

We also recommended acupuncture. Here is a link to the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association referral directory and the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture where you may be able to find a veterinarian close to you who is trained in acupuncture.

Side effects from either of these supplements are rare. It is best to introduce only one supplement at a time, starting at ½ the recommended full dose and gradually building to full dose over the course of several days. If you see any signs of digestive discomfort, then discontinue use of the supplement. You can try introducing the supplement again at a lower dose after all signs of discomfort are gone.
