Intergrooves are wedge-shaped divots imprinted in the wood that follow the contour of a cat’s nail. The reason a cat scratches is to shed the outer layer of the nail. Intergrooves aid in this process naturally by providing perfect and gentle resistance to the claw as it is pulled along the surface of the wood.

Your cat’s paws will not be affected by any splintering of the wood. All of the posts are made from softwoods that allow the claw to dig in gently. Intergrooved wood is safe and most like natural materials that cats scratch outdoors. Fraying of the wood is normal and will occur with continued use. A small sanding pad is included with each post to eliminate frays, but it is not necessary for your cat’s comfort.
