New Green Packaging! Honest Kitchen now has eco-friendly packaging! It reduces materials usage and waste with a fine, recyclable 'minimalist' and unprinted barrier bag that efficiently protects the food inside. The bag is enclosed in a 100% recycled box made from unbleached kraft paperboard. The box is printed with soy-based inks and the finished product is 100% biodegradable or recyclable again after use, too.

Just like all The Honest Kitchen's diets, Prowl must be hydrated with warm water before serving. One tablespoon of Prowl will make about Å“ oz of fresh food when hydrated. Hydrated food is a great choice for cats since it provides them with plenty of fluid which is vital for their delicate urinary and excretory systems.

About Dehydration

Dehydration or drying, is one of the oldest and gentlest methods of food preservation. Food dehydration works by removing only the water content from the ingredients. All other nutrients remain, and become highly concentrated. Dried foods are extremely nutritious, easy to prepare and store, and light weight to ship.

Because dehydration takes place at moderate temperatures, the ingredients are still considered raw. The only exceptions are the meat and egg ingredients, which are dehydrated at high enough temperatures to kill any bacteria present and are therefore essentially considered 'cooked'. This is becuase they must be human-edible grade, to enter our manufacturing facility.

The removal of moisture prevents enzymatic activity, which can lead to browning and decomposition of foods, and also prevents the growth of bacteria, yeast and molds. Dehydration does not actually destroy or kill the food enzymes, as occurs in baking and freezing or high pressure processing such as extrusion. Enzyme activity in dehydrated foods is simply suspended, until the food is rehydrated.

A remarkable example of the way dehydration preserves without destroying, is in Africa, where scientists have discovered live fish being hatched from fish eggs, that have been dehydrated in the sun, during droughts that sometimes last for years. When the rains fall, the lakes and rivers refill with water to rehydrate the eggs - and live fish emerge. The eggs are actually preserved and remain viable throughout the natural dehydration that takes place.

A 4 lb. bucket of Prowl will hydrate to make about 10 lbs. of fresh food.

Prowl is a grain-free recipe especially for cats! It is formulated to meet the AAFCO cat food nutrient profiles for adult maintenance and can be fed as a stand alone diet, or as a nutritionally balanced base for home made raw or cooked cat food.

Preparation

  1. Each tbsp of Prowl should be rehydrated with 1 tbsp of pure, warm, filtered or tap water, or boiled water that has been allowed to cool
  2. Add the water to the food and stir well. The product will initially resemble soup. Let stand for 10 minutes for the ingredients to rehydrate sufficiently. Add your own ingredients if you wish.
  3. Any leftovers should be refrigerated or discarded. Because Prowl contains high meat and low vegetable content, the hydrated product will be a more fluid consistency than the canine diets.

Feeding Guidelines

The following suggested daily amounts should be adjusted to suit your own cat's unique nutritional requirements and appetite, which may vary according to age, level of activity, the weather, and what other ingredients are added.

Cat's Weight Dry Measured Cups
1 to 6 lbs. 1 to 6 tbsp.
6 to 10 lbs. 6 to 8 tbsp.
10 to 16 lbs. 8 to 14 tbsp.
16 to 20 lbs. 14 to 20 tbsp.

Comments about Honest Kitchen Prowl Grain-Free Dehydrated Cat Food:

All three of my cats loved this product, and it's worked great for my cat that has chronic digestive issues. It's convenient and easy to prepare, and it seems to me it's at least as cost-effective as any super-premium canned or kibbled food. I'll definitely buy this stuff again!

My brother/sister 1 1/2 year old half Siamese are picky eaters. They have been on Royal Canin for most of their life. I wanted to get more water into them and a good, grain-free, close to raw food. PROWL is that! My only downside is the cost of shipping (I live in Hawaii).

5 adopted stray cats usually wait for their meal. Now they run and meow until served. Meal time for them is more like a gourmet meal since I place it on top of the kibbles. Life for them could not get any better-Prowl is really Perfect in cat talk!

Comments about Honest Kitchen Prowl Grain-Free Dehydrated Cat Food:

Have been trying different all natural foods for my 9 y.o. tortie. She is a little thing and has been on an all-natural diet for a few years now (grew up on Iams). Currently have her on a Chicken/Rabbit kibble that I leave down all day. However I wanted to give her a "wet" food because she is getting older and her health is very important to me. I read over the ingredients of many raw and dehydrated foods and Prowl seemed to match her kibble so I had hoped that she would accept this as a part of her diet. The first two days, I was throwing it away. Day three she took a taste and cleaned the bowl. Then the yowling started until I fed it to her (I only give it to her at dinner). So I had to listen to that all day for a few days before she "got" that she was only getting it in the evening. Then there were the attempts to get at it while I was preparing the food. She was jumping on the counter (which is a HUGE no-no) and wrapping herself around my legs to the point that I was tripping on her (another HUGE no-no). So it took some training to keep her in the other room while I am preparing it and it had time to solidify. I wait only five minutes before putting it down for her (10 minutes would drive her crazy). She loves this food. Sure, prepping it is a pain and having to be reminded that she wants it with the after 4pm yowling is undesirable but it has made her spunkier, her coat is beautiful, and almost hairball free (only 1 incident since she's been eating it ~ 2 months now). So in the end, I am writing this review (which I normally don't do) because I think this particular brand has done very well for her not only physically but mentally as well. She is engaged when she eats and she is much more active than with just the kibble. She's happy, I'm happy.

Comments about Honest Kitchen Prowl Grain-Free Dehydrated Cat Food:

My 8 year old cat really likes this. It took her a few days to adjust, of course. It also took me a few times to get the water-to-food ratio right too. :) However, I usually add extra water for her because she has had urinary tract problems; she eats it all up! :)

I use this every day along with a small portion of another food (just to give something to bite on).

Also, the product says to wait 10 minutes, but I usually don't. I find that if I stir it enough it becomes almost gravy-like, and that's just the way my cat likes it! :) I will buy this again.

Comments about Honest Kitchen Prowl Grain-Free Dehydrated Cat Food:

I first used Prowl on my Foster Persian. He had been a stray and had diarrhea for months in his previous foster home. I tried several dry and canned foods, and pro-biotics with no success. Once I put him on Prowl his stools became firm in no time and he's been regular since. If I add too many treats of any kind his stool gets soft again.
Then there was the new Foster kitten (6 weeks old)...again; all diarrhea, all the time. Within 24 hrs on Prowl: regular as can be :-) It's the only thing that works for this little man and he devours his meals in seconds! Love this food!

Perhaps it was my fault, but I was not able to get the product to thicken. My cats simply drank it, but reluctantly. There was definitely no "wow" factor!

This product is probably best when given to animals who have not been allowed to develop a taste for sub-standard cuisine. I have a hard time giving up junk food--why should they be any different?

Unless I get the patience to make them like it, I will probably not purchase this product again.

Comments about Honest Kitchen Prowl Grain-Free Dehydrated Cat Food:

I can't stress enough how finicky my cat is - she snubs what most cats would die for. I've been trying to get her onto a raw diet - for allergy and digestion reasons - but she simply refuses to eat it.

I tried Prowl after reading the positive reviews and couldn't believe how quickly she took to the new food. She absolutely LOVES it.

After eating prowl (mixed with Wervuva or AvoDerm canned food) for the past three weeks, the change in her entire demenor has been remarkable. I think she has more energy, is more playfull, seems happier and more loving (crazy I know, but trust me - she used to have an attitude - which has seemed to fade away). I've also noticed that she doen't mind me petting her stomach anymore, which she used to detest, so that leads me to believe Prowl is easier on her stomach / digestive system.

Just placed my second order and I will definitely continue to feed her Prowl.

Comments about Honest Kitchen Prowl Grain-Free Dehydrated Cat Food:

Upon re-hydration, this product is soupy, then hardens. My older cat likes soupy meals, and it was excellent nutrition for her following her dental cleaning. My other cat didn't eat it, but showed interest. As with all foods, they should be introduced gradually or cats are likely to refuse them. After it is rehydrated, it must stand for a few minutes -- then stir it -- otherwise it hardens and takes the shape of the bowl. It does contain some small bone and cartilage fragments, which should be fine since raw bones are part of a cat's natural diet. However, I chose to remove them because I wasn't certain whether the freeze-drying process would make them brittle. Keep this product on hand for emergencies, as it could easily be fed through a dropper. I would also think this food would be excellent for kittens just learning to eat solid food.
