Verve is The Honest Kitchen's original recipe! This premium dog food food is ideal for adult maintenance, for dogs who do well with some grain in their diets. Verve is a low fat, low calorie formula, with beef as the protein source. It's ingredients include a combination of 100% human food grade organic rolled barley, organic rolled rye, beef, organic rolled oats, organic flaxseed, carrots, alfalfa, potatoes, eggs, spinach, apples, chicory, parsley, cranberries, rosemary, vitamins and minerals.

  • 4 lb. Box contains approximately 16 cups of food
  • 10 lb. Box contains approximately 40-43 cups of food

Honest Kitchen uses eco-friendly packaging! A fine, recyclable 'minimalist' and unprinted barrier bag that efficiently protects the food inside helps reduce materials usage and waste. The bag is enclosed in a 100% recycled box made from unbleached kraft paperboard. The box is printed with soy-based inks and the finished product is 100% biodegradable or recyclable again after use, too.

The Honest Kitchen Verve is a wholesome, natural food for dogs that uses gentle dehydration, a unique new approach to canine nutrition. This food helps you create delicious and nutritious meals made with real, recognizable, and human-grade ingredients that are ready to prepare and serve at home. Simply add warm water to rehydrate, and you have a complete meal with USDA meat, fresh fruits and vegetables, organic flaxseed, herbs, vitamins, minerals, and organic grains.

The Honest Kitchen's dehydrated food offers many of the benefits of a biologically appropriate raw pet food diet, combined with the convenience and peace of mind of a nutritionally balanced, ready-blended product. Dehydration simply removes the moisture, which prevents decomposition. As an ancient form of preserving food, virtually all of the nutrients are left intact. This is a much "fresher", and therefore healthier, approach than the extrusion process that dry kibble undergoes. See below for a description of each formula. All of Honest Kitchen's dog food and dehydrated raw dog food products are formulated to meet the AAFCO nutrient profiles for dogs and you don't have to add anything to make them 'complete'. However, the original idea behind these diets was as a base for a raw or other fresh homemade diet and to facilitate that, they are somewhat 'lite' in terms of fat and protein, so that your own choice of raw, or cooked, meat can be added, if desired.

It is entirely a matter of personal choice (and your dog's taste!) whether you add in extra meat and other ingredients, or not. Most people with younger and more active dogs like to mix in the additional meat, and those with senior or overweight animals usually prefer to feed the organic dog food alone. The Honest Kitchen supplies pet owners with the best in fresh dehydrated raw dog food and other organic dog food products.

About Dehydration

Dehydration or drying, is one of the oldest and gentlest methods of food preservation. Food dehydration works by removing only the water content from the ingredients. All other nutrients remain, and become highly concentrated. Dried foods are extremely nutritious, easy to prepare and store, and light weight to ship.

Because dehydration takes place at moderate temperatures, the ingredients are still considered raw. The only exceptions are the meat and egg ingredients, which are dehydrated at high enough temperatures to kill any bacteria present and are therefore essentially considered 'cooked'. This is becuase they must be human-edible grade, to enter our manufacturing facility.

The removal of moisture prevents enzymatic activity, which can lead to browning and decomposition of foods, and also prevents the growth of bacteria, yeast and molds. Dehydration does not actually destroy or kill the food enzymes, as occurs in baking and freezing or high pressure processing such as extrusion. Enzyme activity in dehydrated foods is simply suspended, until the food is rehydrated.

A remarkable example of the way dehydration preserves without destroying, is in Africa, where scientists have discovered live fish being hatched from fish eggs, that have been dehydrated in the sun, during droughts that sometimes last for years. When the rains fall, the lakes and rivers refill with water to rehydrate the eggs - and live fish emerge. The eggs are actually preserved and remain viable throughout the natural dehydration that takes place.

Comments about Honest Kitchen Verve Dehydrated Dog Food:

Very fine textured, like all the HK's I've tried, so good for little guys. The green color's a bit disconcerting (all those veg), but the dogs don't notice. Expensive cf to homemade, like all dehys, but great emergency/traveling food. Probably cheaper than buying frozen raw, too.

If you're only feeding a couple of dogs, this with some raw meat/bone added would be a great diet -- better than even the best kibble!

Comments about Honest Kitchen Verve Dehydrated Dog Food:

My sweet, slightly neurotic Cattle Dog mix, Poppy, is not picky - that I will give you. She'll eat anything questionably edible, so I cannot say every picky dog will enjoy this product. Poppy LOVES it.

After battling with my partner over food options, our boss at the time gave us a sample to take home. As soon as Poppy could wolf it down, we went out and switched her over to Honest Kitchen Verve for good. That was when she was 7.

She is now 10 and looks younger than ever. Her coat is gorgeous, her waistline is much healthier, and her joints are not giving her arthritic trouble nearly as much as they used it.

I HIGHLY recommend the Verve product for any senior or lower-energy dog. The Honest Kitchen line has more applicable foods for active dogs, puppies, and even cats.

Comments about Honest Kitchen Verve Dehydrated Dog Food:

I never was comfortable feeding dry kibble, and don't know how some manufacturers can call their kibble "natural". My dogs love this food and I feel that they are getting a product that provides enough moisture for them.

I ask my dogs if they are ready for their "soup" and they go crazy. I mix it and add to their regular dry food because without something extra, they stand there and look at it and look up at me and then walk away.

This dog food is easy to use (just add water & wait a few minutes), very portable, & also a great addition to my dog's raw meat & poultry plus raw organic veggies diet. The ingredients are human-grade & my beautiful Pembroke Welsh Corgi practically inhales it, both when mixed with other ingredients & all by itself.

We're big fans of all Honest Kitchen's dehydrated dog foods.

Comments about Honest Kitchen Verve Dehydrated Dog Food:

I have a 5 year old Shih Tzu, Bob, who was a puppy mill rescue. He had been crated for the first 3 years of his life. When I first brought Bob home with me he had no muscle tone and no energy. No matter what I have fed him - even trying to make food from scratch - nothing would help his energy level. Bob comes to work with me every day. He would spend most of the day sleeping. I would end up having to carry him out in the evening to go home because he was too exhausted to walk on his own.
Taking Bob for walks generally meant carrying Bob back home because he could not go far without tiring. I started him on Verve a month ago, and I cannot believe that this is the same dog. His energy level has steadily increased. His eyes are bright and he just looks healthier.
Most importantly, he just looks happier. Other staff members at work
are amazed at the transformation. Not only does Bob love the Verve,
but I had to stop serving it to him on a paper plate because he would eat the food and then proceed to eat the plate. I cannot thank you enough. Now I just need to find something for my energy level, so that I can keep up with him.

Comments about Honest Kitchen Verve Dehydrated Dog Food:

Verve is my dog's favorite Honest Kitchen variety. He is extremely picky, and I think it helps that Verve smells like green peppers. I tried to switch him to Thrive for a while, thinking it would be a little better with a little less grains to reduce the gas he gets from time to time, but he would only eat it if Verve was mixed in it. He cleans the bowl when I set it down. According to the directions, you don't need to boil the water you re-hydrate it with, just let it sit for 5-10 minutes, but then the oatmeal in it does not cook. My boy is not patient enough to let the food sit, since he sits there watching me make it. Other than that, this is a good healthy food with premium ingredients that saves me time by not having to cook myself. Cheaper than buying all of the ingredients separately.
