Helps our allergic cat... but with a caveat...

Pros

Comments about Nature's Variety Limited Ingredient Diet Dry Cat Food:

We have a young adopted cat who unfortunately, is allergic to nearly all kibble food, since she is allergic to poultry, fish, and grains. Exposure to these causes severe ear infections, itchiness and fur-biting, asthma, and digestive upset. As one of these ingredients is in nearly every kind of kibble on the market, we were in despair as to what to feed her. Rabbit is a novel protein, and this variety has "limited ingredients" so she is able to eat it without ear infections, though something in it is still bothering her. But, at least we are avoiding expensive trips to the vet at the moment.

There are 3 things I don't like about this food: 1. The high content of peas--cats do not eat peas, they do not have the right digestive enzymes for carbohydrates. But, it serves as an inexpensive filler and adds fiber to the food.

      2. The first ingredient is rabbit meal, which means mostly ground rabbit bones, and not rabbit meat. The actual meat content of this food is minimal, and the bone meal makes it harder to digest.

      3. And this is the worst for us, and could be a result of the other 2 cons: this makes the most horrendous, wretched smelling stools my husband and I have ever had the misfortune to experience with our cats. They are soft, and black in color, like the food. We did not want to repurchase it for this reason, but until we can find something else our cat can tolerate, we will deal with the smell.

Comments about Nature's Variety Limited Ingredient Diet Dry Cat Food:

I normally don't write reviews, but I have really been impressed with this product so I thought I would share my experience.

One of my cats has allergies to fish, fish oil, fish by product and she would probably break out in hives if she just looked at a fish. The other one has had kidney issues in the past and also posterior gland issues (to put that nicely) related to food. Two out of the three cats are extremely picky eaters, but all of them loved the rabbit formula.

I never understood when people claimed that their cats had more energy after switching their food, mostly because I had never had that experience with my cats, but it has happened with my cats and this food. The two older cats have a lot more energy now, all three cats have improved coats and the cat with the fish allergies as started to grow back hair on her belly and bum. The cat with the kidney issues has also benefited since I removed all fish from his diet (his blood work is back to normal). So, all in all, I am extremely happy.

The only real cons that I can think of is the strong odor now when they poop (sorry, I couldn't think of a better word for it). This food is also on the pricy side, but I feel that the fact that all my cats eat it and it has been resolving allergy issues makes the price worth it. It still cost less than vet prescribed allergy foods and seems to be healthier.

I feed them this in the morning and wet food at night. This food does seem to stiffen the stools, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I personally didn't want my cats to get constipated either. Constipation had been an issue in the past when I used to feed them EVO due to the high protein content of the food.

That being said, if you don't mind stinky poo's and like happy and healthy pets then this foods for you! I really am glad I tried this stuff out.
