Healthy kidneys filter waste from the blood so it can get back to work carrying nutrients and oxygen to tissues, so the health of your pet’s kidneys resonates throughout their entire body. The kidneys also play a key role in maintaining blood pressure and pH levels, in the bone marrow’s red blood cell production, and in regulating the use of key minerals in the body. Our Kidney Support Herbal Formula can help maintain your pet’s optimal kidney health and normal renal functioning Kidneys can be damaged by ingesting toxins or medications, through genetic factors, and quite commonly due to infectious invaders like bacteria. Effects of this damage can be seen in many organs, including the bladder and urinary tract, where clear evidence may appear as recurrent infections, and in the form of urine crystals or kidney stones. Kidney damage also adds up over time, and it can be so subtle that even the most attentive human companions fail to spot any signs in their pets. This is why kidney issues often seem to appear “out of nowhere” as our pets age, becoming obvious only when the problem reaches a critical level. Kidney Support Herbal Formula contains a blend of herbal ingredients from both Western and Chinese herbal traditions. The key factors of the formula help balance urine pH, promote healthy circulation to improve renal blood flow, aid in normal detoxification processes and support the immune system in response to foreign material in the urinary tract and kidneys. From the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, the formula's benefit to kidneys is enhanced through the focused use of herbs selected to support heart and spleen health, which in turn support the kidneys. Designed to support healthy function of the kidneys and bladder in cats and dogs needing prevention, maintenance and care for stressed kidneys, our blend of herbal and botanical ingredients in this formula includes: - Cranberry Juice Extract: Traditionally, cranberry has been used to protect against urinary tract infections. Research suggests that its mechanism of action is preventing E-coli bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall. Cranberry also helps to balance urinary tract pH (acidify), to dissolve struvite (Magnesium-Ammonium-Phosphate) crystals, which may develop in urine if it is too alkaline.
- Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis): The soothing properties of marshmallow make it useful in inflammation and irritation of the GI tract, and of the urinary and respiratory organs. It is excellent for discomfort of the urinary organs, exerting a relaxing effect upon the passages. It also has mild diuretic properties, helps control bacterial infection, and soothes and softens irritated tissues.
- Astragalus Root: Astragalus (Huang qi) has been used as a popular herbal tonic in China for many centuries. One of its primary uses in TCM is to invigorate the spleen. As an adaptogen, it helps the body regain balance and is the most popular herb in Chinese medicine for its diuretic, cardio-tonic, vasodilating and other useful qualities. Astragalus is used to help maintain normal functions of the liver, lung, kidney, spleen, stomach and heart, to detoxify the system, and to bolster white blood cell growth in supporting the immune system.
- Rehmannia Root Cooked (Rehmannia rutinosa): Rehmannia (shu di huang) nourishes the blood and replenishes the kidney. TCM sees kidney dysfunction as a syndrome of excessive heat in the blood, impairment of body fluid generation and Yin-deficiency in all channels. Rehmannia is often selected in Chinese herbal formulas for its ability to nourish Yin, and normalize heat and moisture imbalances.
- Hawthorn Berries (Crataegus oxyacantha): Healthy circulation is essential to kidney health, and studies show that hawthorn berries strengthen heartbeat and improve circulation in the blood vessels of the heart. Hawthorn berries gently dilate the coronary vessels increasing the supply of arterial blood to the heart. This action enhances oxygen utilization, resulting in a stronger, more powerful heart muscle. Increased circulation improves renal blood flow leading to renal clearance. This botanical also has mild diuretic action.
- Corn Silk (Zea mays): Traditionally, herbalists have noted the soothing and diuretic properties of corn silk, using it to address all conditions of the urinary system. It is useful for helping relieve painful urination, in treatment of urinary tract infections and kidney stones, and in prevention of bladder and kidney infections. Corn silk has been used in combination with other herbs to soothe cystitis (inflammation of the bladder) and urethritis (inflammation of the urethra). It is also used to regulate edema (abnormal accumulation of fluids), which may help reduce the formation of crystals by diluting particle matter present in the urine.
- Olive Leaf (Olea europaea): The main beneficial constituent of olive leaf is the phytochemical oleuropein, which has a powerful anti-bacterial effect, and it has the ability to interfere with amino acid production that viruses need to reproduce in the body. Olive leaf also may strengthen immune response. Many flavonoids in olive leaf extract have been shown to exhibit anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties.
- Ginkgo Biloba Leaf: Another botanical known for promoting healthy circulation, ginkgo is believed to promote healthy blood flow to tissues and organs, help protect against oxidative cell damage from free radicals, and counter many of the effects of platelet-activating factor (platelet aggregation, blood clotting) that are implicated in the development of a number of health issues, including cardiovascular and renal disorders.

A few things to keep in mind when using herbal remedies: - Begin only one remedy or medication of any kind at a time. Do not add another remedy until you have clearly established your pet’s response to the first one, including signs of intolerance or interaction with any other remedy being used (unless you are working with a holistic veterinarian familiar with the remedies being administered).
- More frequent dosage – say 3 times per day, is typically more effective than a large dose once per day, as spacing out the doses allows the herbs to remain in the animal’s system and provide optimal, consistent benefits.
- Response to herbal remedies varies by individual, so suggested dosages may need to be adjusted depending on your pet’s response. When introducing any new supplement, it is wise to start with a lower than recommended dose and build up over the course of several days to a week. If vomiting, diarrhea or other signs of intolerance occur, a remedy should be stopped for two days, and then ½ the original dose can be administered to see if the lower dose can be tolerated.
- Herbs take time to build in the system, so do not expect immediate results. It can take from several days up to a week or more to know if the herbal remedy is effective depending upon the severity of the issue being treated and the overall vitality of the animal.
- If the animal does not respond to the initial dose, a larger dose may be necessary. A VERY GRADUAL increase to up to 50% above the original dose can be given to see if results are improved. This should be done with the guidance of a trained veterinarian or with a good knowledge of the herbs you are using.
- Herbs and other natural remedies work best for an animal whose system is given the best possible conditions for health and healing. This includes having the healthiest and freshest diet possible, along with proper nutritional and digestive supplements such as digestive enzymes, essential fatty acids, and adequate levels of essential vitamins and minerals.
- Check with a knowledgeable veterinarian if your companion is on any conventional medications that herbal remedies could interact with. If your pet's symptoms worsen or change in any way that concerns you, discontinue use of any supplements and contact your veterinarian.
