What is Cushing’s Disease?

Cushing's disease is also known as hyperadrenocorticism and is characterized by the over-production of hormones from the adrenal glands. The extra high levels of these hormones in your pet’s body can cause varied and serious symptoms.

Function and Definition of the Adrenal Glands

The adrenal glands are two, small bean-shaped structures situated above each of your pet’s two kidneys. They consist of two separate regions: an inner adrenal medulla surrounded by an outer adrenal cortex.

The adrenal glands release a wide variety of hormones. The medulla is responsible for producing epinephrine and norepinephrine (adrenaline). These hormones control the body’s reaction to stress and affect blood pressure and heart rate. The adrenal cortex produces hormones such as cortisone and aldosterone which are necessary for balancing fluid and electrolytes (salt) in the body as well as regulating the use of dietary protein, fats and carbohydrates and controlling inflammation.

What are the symptoms of Cushing’s Disease?

High levels of corticosteroids in the body can cause a number of health problems in pets including:

  • Increased thirst/drinking and urination
  • Increased appetite
  • Panting
  • High blood pressure
  • Loss of hair
  • Calcified lumps in the skin
  • Thinning skin and susceptibility to infections
  • Over time, if not well-controlled, Cushing’s can increase your pet's risk of other conditions including diabetes, weakening of the heart and nervous system disease.

What are the main causes of Cushing’s in pets?

There are a couple of possible causes for Cushing's in pets. The first is that your pet may be taking in excess corticosteroids in the form of medications such as Prednisone. If your pet is not taking a drug like Prednisone and has been diagnosed with Cushing’s, it is probably due to a tumor (usually benign) on either of the adrenal glands themselves or on the pituitary gland.

Comments about Native Remedies PetAlive Cushex Drops S:

Our 15.5 year old female was diagnosed via lab results or pointed towards that. Being she is old did not want to drug her up or put her thru the rest of the tests to get a confirmation it is Cushings. She had the classic signs, large intake of water, peeing in the house, and for our girl she had lost all her hair straight down her back. Found Cushex and its been unbelievable!! Hair is grown back, thirst is back to normal, she has a little more zip to her each day. She was also diagnosed with Vestibular Disease and was told by the specialist who suggested that she might have Cushings that if we can control the Cushings that in turn helps control the episodes she has with the Vestibular. Knock on wood we are 6 months in with no vestibular episode!!! She was having one every month. Give this Cushex a try - doesn't hurt to give it a whirl. As with anything there isnt a one size fits all cause everyone animal is different but giving this a try you never know as we have found out, it worked for our girl!!!

Comments about Native Remedies PetAlive Cushex Drops S:

My dog is 9-year old chihuahua, Claire. I discovered her cushings disease 10 mo ago when she started to drink extensive amount of water and peed on bed throughout the night (cannot go to bathroom in time). Claire's liver values are quite high (ALP, ALT) and over the top.

Long-story-short, after 3 mo of giving her cushex drops, her cushings is under control and liver value went under the normal range.

Last Oct, 2015, she was given Trilostane from small amount and increased a bit more every month for 5 mo since there is no sign of improvement in terms of symptom. ALP, ALT value showed improvement (measurable as 12, but still over 10).

I started to worry about the amount of medication given (2.0ml each x 2 times per day). Around that time, her right eye looking upward and cheek hanging off (paralyzed face), and head tilted off to the right side. Took her ER and they said it might be neuro problem.

Did MRI and found a tumor (not cancerous) and the vet said it may be growing bigger due to Trilostane, which maybe causing the paralyzed face and tilting.

I started this Cushex Drops, 7 drops each meal x 2 times a day in the hope to reduce Trilostane and quit it eventually.

After 1 week, her energy is back but not so much of water consumption. I reduced the Trilostane to 1.8ml each. I reported the vet and he said continue to do it if it looks working.

Overtime, her water consumption became normal, she pees on her toilet pads, appetite is still high but not excessive, and her energy level is the best in her entire life! She jumps and climb up the stairs (before she could not), and her paralyzed face and tilting are all gone.

Today's exam showed her liver value (ALP, ALT) is 4.4, showing normal (under 10)! I reduced Trilostane 0.7ml each and continue to give cushex drops (same amount 7 drops each meal x 2 times a day).

When she looked low energy and were shivering, I reduced Trilostane and she gained energy back. I don't know if there is co-relation there or just a temperature/weather change in Boston, but seems reducing chemical is the better course of action so far.

My 12 year old Beagle was drinking a lot of water and peeing uncontroably..the vet suggested testing for Cushings disease..so I read up on it and did not like the strong meds he would be on if in fact he did have it...so I looked for alternatives..and found Cushex..It worked immediately. He stopped hoarding water and was able to make it outside to pee. He was on it at least 6 months...we went on vacation and I had a new dog sitter for my 4 dogs..after going over all the directions..I forgot to tell her about the Cushex...when we got home ..the poor guy was hoarding water and Peeing ..it lasted one day and I put him right back on the Cushex and it worked right away. I am kind of glad that happened because he does have an issue and Cushex has proven that it is really working..THANK YOU

My 12-year-old Golden Retriever/Labrador large breed dog was diagnosed with Cushings at the age of 10. Granted, my pets go for annual exams, therefore this disease in her case was caught by watching her liver levels increase over the years and not lower with the use of liver cleansers. After reading the side effects of the drugs normally prescribed for this disease in dogs, I refused the drugs and put her on these wonderful drops. She's now two years with the disease and there are still no symptoms of Cushings, except some panting. I use these drops twice a day administered in a pill pocket and then she goes for a mile+ walk on a 15-foot extension lead so that she may stop and sniff to release those great endorphins which also help fight off the Cushings. This is a GREAT product and there is nothing I would change about it.

My little elder shih tzu was prescribed antifungal and antibiotics for his illness. They seem to take the edge off, but his flank was still bloated and he just isn't 100%. We have been using this product for a month and his stomach is not as distended as it once was. He is livelier and even plays sometimes. I definitely see improvements.

My 15-year-old dachshund was diagnosed with cushings. The medicine the vet gave her made no difference and she constantly urinated in the house. I tried these drops for her and they worked wonders. She has only had one accident since she started them. I am just so happy that I have finally found something that works for her.

Our 11 yo schnauzer was diagnosed with Cushing's Disease at the beginning of October 2014. We started using Cushex in November and only saw minimal decrease in water consumption and frequency to urinate. He was drinking up to 11 cups of water a day. This decreased down to 6-7 cups a day, which is double the norm. Our pet continued to decline and started exhibiting signs of cognitive dysfunction. He passed in January 2015. We only saw minimal results using this product. Note: I posted a similar review on the Cushex website and see that it was never published.

My jack Russell terrier was a neurotic mess for at least 4 solid years...or more.
I've spent hundreds or should I say thousands of dollars trying to figure out what was her deal and having numerous sleepless nights caused by her agitation.
Very healthy looking dog other than that as I always taker hiking and walking every day and also fed her a healthy diet.
Finally a Vet diagnosed her with cushings (no physical, evident, signs) and I didn't want to drug her up and having to take expensive tests so I tried "cushex drops " and she is a totally new dog. Ben taking these drops 2x daily for over a year now and both of us sleep like a baby!!!!
My dog is 16 now and she is still my outdoor companion

The product is very easy to give. My dog has never refused to take it when put in a small amount of wet food. I'm glad I decided to try this instead of the traditional method of treatment. My chihuaha is 12 years old and was diagnosed with cushings about 5 months ago. I saw changes gradually but the last 30 days I've seen a huge improvement. His haircoat, anxiety and overall behaviour is pretty much back to normal. It may not work for eveyone but it worked for us. Great product!! It's worth a try. Keep in mind this is like any natural rememdy, results don't happen over night. It takes a while for it to build up in the system but it is well worth the wait.
