Sizing Instructions

Bark'n Boots are built to secure around the ankle but below the carpal pad. The boot should have room in the paw area, allowing the paw to spread when bearing weight.

Tips for fitting Ruffwear boots

  • Don’t assume large dogs have large paws – measuring is critical to ensure a proper fit!
  • Unlike human footwear, sizes are based on the width of the paw, not the length.
  • Bark’n Boots are designed to fit a dogs anatomy – they’re not designed to be worn at a right angle like human footwear.
  • The boots do not need to be pulled up past the carpal pad.

Measuring Paw Width

1. Have your dog stand on a firm surface (wood, linoleum, or concrete).
2. Place a piece of blank paper under a front paw.
3. Lift the dog's other front paw so that its weight is placed firmly on the paw being measured.
4. Mark the paper at the paw's widest point on the left and right edges of the paw.
5. Use a ruler to measure the width of the paw (in inches) from the left mark to the right mark.
6. Use the chart to determine the proper size.

For example: if the width is measured between 2.25" and 2.5", the dog would wear a small boot; between 2.75" and 3.0", a large.

Size Paw Width *
XXS 1.6" - 2.0" 38 - 51 mm
XS 2.1" - 2.25" 51 - 57 mm
S 2.3" - 2.5" 57 - 64 mm
M 2.6" - 2.75" 64 - 70 mm
L 2.8" - 3.0" 70 - 76 mm
XL 3.1" - 3.25" 76 - 83 mm

*paw width = measurement across widest part of paw, when bearing weight

Comments about Ruff Wear Ruffwear Summit Trex Boots:

First, I was surprised that these boots stayed on. I have a German Shorthair Pointer and expected that she would lose them during one of her runs. I was pleased at how well they stayed on, although they sometimes turned around so she was running on the top of the boot rather than the bottom. My one concern (for her) was that the seam of the boot chafed the side of her leg where her dew claws were. She had sores on both legs. When I tried bandaging the legs to create a buffer, it caused the boots to slide off. This situation may be unique to my dog and I would still recommend that anyone try them.
