The liver has a difficult and complicated job, participating in many activities within the body.  It breaks down all the chemicals the body encounters on a daily basis, including drugs.  It also filters blood, works to eliminate bacteria, produces bile to aid digestion, and creates various other substances such as lipoproteins. This is why the liver is the only organ that continually regenerates: It must do so in order to continue it's demanding work.

Due to the liver's complex tasks, it may be susceptible to a variety of problems.  The liver can be injured due to trauma, infection or toxicity.  Symptoms of liver disfunction may include: lack of appetite and weight loss, vomiting, weakness, depression, increased thirst, dark colored urine, and/or seizures.  These signs may appear quickly or develop slowly over time.  Other diseases may cause similar signs so it is important to take your pet to the veterinarian for examination.

SAMe (S-Adenosylmethionine) has been clinically proven in veterinary trials to safely and effectively support and protect liver function at the cellular level in pets.

  • Protects liver cells and contributes to hepatocellular regeneration
  • Well tolerated by most pets
  • No known drug interactions
  • May actually protect against liver damage caused by certain toxins or drugs such as acetaminophen, prednisone, etc.

Of all the published studies on SAMe, those regarding it's support of the liver are perhaps the most comprehensive.  Almost a thousand published studies document the ability of this bioactive form of methionine to prevent and treat liver disorders.  SAMe is the central player in liver biochemistry. It does two crucial things: It is involved in the formation of myelin, the white sheath that surrounds nerve cells, and it transforms itself into the liver's most vital substance, glutathione - an important antioxidant.  The liver contains the third highest amount of SAMe in the body, after the adrenal and pineal glands.  In addition to its many other functions, SAMe plays a leading role in liver regeneration.  In fact, the liver has special SAMe enzymes just for regenerating tissue.

An agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services conducted a meticulous evaluation of SAMe in 2002. Their findings show that the efficacy of SAMe is comparable to mainstream medicine in promoting good mood and bone and joint health. The difference, however, is that SAMe is virtually free of the side effects.

SAMe plays a role in the immune system, maintains cell membranes, and helps produce and break down brain chemicals such as serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine as well as vitamin B12.  SAMe also participates in the making of genetic material, known as DNA, and cartilage.  SAMe is the most effective facilitator of youthful methylation.  Published research shows that methylation defects create a variety of age-related problems including neuronal and hepatic dysfunction.  Enhancing youthful methylation facilitates healthy enzymatic life processes throughout the body.
