New Green Packaging! Honest Kitchen now has eco-friendly packaging! It reduces materials usage and waste with a fine, recyclable 'minimalist' and unprinted barrier bag that efficiently protects the food inside. The bag is enclosed in a 100% recycled box made from unbleached kraft paperboard. The box is printed with soy-based inks and the finished product is 100% biodegradable or recyclable again after use, too.

Just like all The Honest Kitchen's diets, Prowl must be hydrated with warm water before serving. One tablespoon of Prowl will make about œ oz of fresh food when hydrated. Hydrated food is a great choice for cats since it provides them with plenty of fluid which is vital for their delicate urinary and excretory systems.

About Dehydration

Dehydration or drying, is one of the oldest and gentlest methods of food preservation. Food dehydration works by removing only the water content from the ingredients. All other nutrients remain, and become highly concentrated. Dried foods are extremely nutritious, easy to prepare and store, and light weight to ship.

Because dehydration takes place at moderate temperatures, the ingredients are still considered raw. The only exceptions are the meat and egg ingredients, which are dehydrated at high enough temperatures to kill any bacteria present and are therefore essentially considered 'cooked'. This is becuase they must be human-edible grade, to enter our manufacturing facility.

The removal of moisture prevents enzymatic activity, which can lead to browning and decomposition of foods, and also prevents the growth of bacteria, yeast and molds. Dehydration does not actually destroy or kill the food enzymes, as occurs in baking and freezing or high pressure processing such as extrusion. Enzyme activity in dehydrated foods is simply suspended, until the food is rehydrated.

A remarkable example of the way dehydration preserves without destroying, is in Africa, where scientists have discovered live fish being hatched from fish eggs, that have been dehydrated in the sun, during droughts that sometimes last for years. When the rains fall, the lakes and rivers refill with water to rehydrate the eggs - and live fish emerge. The eggs are actually preserved and remain viable throughout the natural dehydration that takes place.

A 4 lb. bucket of Prowl will hydrate to make about 10 lbs. of fresh food.

Prowl is a grain-free recipe especially for cats! It is formulated to meet the AAFCO cat food nutrient profiles for adult maintenance and can be fed as a stand alone diet, or as a nutritionally balanced base for home made raw or cooked cat food.

Preparation

  1. Each tbsp of Prowl should be rehydrated with 1 tbsp of pure, warm, filtered or tap water, or boiled water that has been allowed to cool
  2. Add the water to the food and stir well. The product will initially resemble soup. Let stand for 10 minutes for the ingredients to rehydrate sufficiently. Add your own ingredients if you wish.
  3. Any leftovers should be refrigerated or discarded. Because Prowl contains high meat and low vegetable content, the hydrated product will be a more fluid consistency than the canine diets.

Feeding Guidelines

The following suggested daily amounts should be adjusted to suit your own cat's unique nutritional requirements and appetite, which may vary according to age, level of activity, the weather, and what other ingredients are added.

Cat's Weight Dry Measured Cups
1 to 6 lbs. 1 to 6 tbsp.
6 to 10 lbs. 6 to 8 tbsp.
10 to 16 lbs. 8 to 14 tbsp.
16 to 20 lbs. 14 to 20 tbsp.

Comments about Honest Kitchen Prowl Grain-Free Dehydrated Cat Food:

I'd like to see a heavier texture, the particles are so fine. However, you have to mix with enough water otherwise you get a tough paste that will pack around the gumline. A small chunky texture would be ideal.
I've raised Persian cats for over 15 years on a very small scale and mainly feed raw chicken and turkey in small chunks with a supplement powder. I do like to alternate with Prowl and a high quality canned for variety to which I add a package of chicken gizzard and hearts from the grocery. I cut it up a bit so the cats have something to chew, which is better for their teeth, gums and jaw muscles.

Comments about Honest Kitchen Prowl Grain-Free Dehydrated Cat Food:

My kitty was just diagnosed two months ago with kidney disease. She was dehydrated, her coat was matted and ugly. She was taken to the vet. She was put on fluids to rehydrate her. She is taking meds for kidney disease, but this food keeps her maintained and hydrated. This food is also easy to digest and it keeps her drinking lots of water which is very good for her kidneys. Her fur is beautiful and she is frisky. My kitty of 17 years old is doing great!

Comments about Honest Kitchen Prowl Grain-Free Dehydrated Cat Food:

My kitties (all mutts!) are on the (BARF) raw meat diet - and I say this as a vegetarian. They thrive on it, even though I still give them a little bit of dry, grain-free food as treats, and a little bit of grain-free wet food to be mixed with the raw meat for some "flavor."
So, I on alternate days, I mix my (self) prepared ground meat, with little bit of Honest Kitchen Prowl Grain-Free Dehydrated Cat Food, and my kitties are loving it.
I like the extra nutrition it provides, and it's fantastic on the road!

I have a variety of healthy foods I give my cats. Frozen raw, grainless dry, and this stuff. They also get some milk, so both are happy and fat for the winter, which they need.

Comments about Honest Kitchen Prowl Grain-Free Dehydrated Cat Food:

This product was a bust for my little Buddy, with whom I wanted to try the dehydrated/raw approach because of an autoimmune disorder. He's normally an enthusiastic eater, but he finds this product really yucky. I wish I'd been able to find a smaller box to try, since I now have a great deal of a product that's, for us, essentially worthless. Dang.

Cat barfed up the first offering and refused the next few. She will now eat a tablespoon at a time as a supplement. It smells yeasty to me. I had to experiment with texture, making it very soupy, as she wouldn't touch it when fully reconstituted. However she now has a shiny coat and this timid cat interacts with me much more. I don't think I'll buy another box but am glad this one won't be wasted.

All three of my cats loved this product, and it's worked great for my cat that has chronic digestive issues. It's convenient and easy to prepare, and it seems to me it's at least as cost-effective as any super-premium canned or kibbled food. I'll definitely buy this stuff again!

My brother/sister 1 1/2 year old half Siamese are picky eaters. They have been on Royal Canin for most of their life. I wanted to get more water into them and a good, grain-free, close to raw food. PROWL is that! My only downside is the cost of shipping (I live in Hawaii).

5 adopted stray cats usually wait for their meal. Now they run and meow until served. Meal time for them is more like a gourmet meal since I place it on top of the kibbles. Life for them could not get any better-Prowl is really Perfect in cat talk!

Comments about Honest Kitchen Prowl Grain-Free Dehydrated Cat Food:

Have been trying different all natural foods for my 9 y.o. tortie. She is a little thing and has been on an all-natural diet for a few years now (grew up on Iams). Currently have her on a Chicken/Rabbit kibble that I leave down all day. However I wanted to give her a "wet" food because she is getting older and her health is very important to me. I read over the ingredients of many raw and dehydrated foods and Prowl seemed to match her kibble so I had hoped that she would accept this as a part of her diet. The first two days, I was throwing it away. Day three she took a taste and cleaned the bowl. Then the yowling started until I fed it to her (I only give it to her at dinner). So I had to listen to that all day for a few days before she "got" that she was only getting it in the evening. Then there were the attempts to get at it while I was preparing the food. She was jumping on the counter (which is a HUGE no-no) and wrapping herself around my legs to the point that I was tripping on her (another HUGE no-no). So it took some training to keep her in the other room while I am preparing it and it had time to solidify. I wait only five minutes before putting it down for her (10 minutes would drive her crazy). She loves this food. Sure, prepping it is a pain and having to be reminded that she wants it with the after 4pm yowling is undesirable but it has made her spunkier, her coat is beautiful, and almost hairball free (only 1 incident since she's been eating it ~ 2 months now). So in the end, I am writing this review (which I normally don't do) because I think this particular brand has done very well for her not only physically but mentally as well. She is engaged when she eats and she is much more active than with just the kibble. She's happy, I'm happy.
