Verve is The Honest Kitchen's original recipe! This premium dog food food is ideal for adult maintenance, for dogs who do well with some grain in their diets. Verve is a low fat, low calorie formula, with beef as the protein source. It's ingredients include a combination of 100% human food grade organic rolled barley, organic rolled rye, beef, organic rolled oats, organic flaxseed, carrots, alfalfa, potatoes, eggs, spinach, apples, chicory, parsley, cranberries, rosemary, vitamins and minerals.

  • 4 lb. Box contains approximately 16 cups of food
  • 10 lb. Box contains approximately 40-43 cups of food

Honest Kitchen uses eco-friendly packaging! A fine, recyclable 'minimalist' and unprinted barrier bag that efficiently protects the food inside helps reduce materials usage and waste. The bag is enclosed in a 100% recycled box made from unbleached kraft paperboard. The box is printed with soy-based inks and the finished product is 100% biodegradable or recyclable again after use, too.

The Honest Kitchen Verve is a wholesome, natural food for dogs that uses gentle dehydration, a unique new approach to canine nutrition. This food helps you create delicious and nutritious meals made with real, recognizable, and human-grade ingredients that are ready to prepare and serve at home. Simply add warm water to rehydrate, and you have a complete meal with USDA meat, fresh fruits and vegetables, organic flaxseed, herbs, vitamins, minerals, and organic grains.

The Honest Kitchen's dehydrated food offers many of the benefits of a biologically appropriate raw pet food diet, combined with the convenience and peace of mind of a nutritionally balanced, ready-blended product. Dehydration simply removes the moisture, which prevents decomposition. As an ancient form of preserving food, virtually all of the nutrients are left intact. This is a much "fresher", and therefore healthier, approach than the extrusion process that dry kibble undergoes. See below for a description of each formula. All of Honest Kitchen's dog food and dehydrated raw dog food products are formulated to meet the AAFCO nutrient profiles for dogs and you don't have to add anything to make them 'complete'. However, the original idea behind these diets was as a base for a raw or other fresh homemade diet and to facilitate that, they are somewhat 'lite' in terms of fat and protein, so that your own choice of raw, or cooked, meat can be added, if desired.

It is entirely a matter of personal choice (and your dog's taste!) whether you add in extra meat and other ingredients, or not. Most people with younger and more active dogs like to mix in the additional meat, and those with senior or overweight animals usually prefer to feed the organic dog food alone. The Honest Kitchen supplies pet owners with the best in fresh dehydrated raw dog food and other organic dog food products.

About Dehydration

Dehydration or drying, is one of the oldest and gentlest methods of food preservation. Food dehydration works by removing only the water content from the ingredients. All other nutrients remain, and become highly concentrated. Dried foods are extremely nutritious, easy to prepare and store, and light weight to ship.

Because dehydration takes place at moderate temperatures, the ingredients are still considered raw. The only exceptions are the meat and egg ingredients, which are dehydrated at high enough temperatures to kill any bacteria present and are therefore essentially considered 'cooked'. This is because they must be human-edible grade, to enter our manufacturing facility.

The removal of moisture prevents enzymatic activity, which can lead to browning and decomposition of foods, and also prevents the growth of bacteria, yeast and molds. Dehydration does not actually destroy or kill the food enzymes, as occurs in baking and freezing or high pressure processing such as extrusion. Enzyme activity in dehydrated foods is simply suspended, until the food is rehydrated.

A remarkable example of the way dehydration preserves without destroying, is in Africa, where scientists have discovered live fish being hatched from fish eggs, that have been dehydrated in the sun, during droughts that sometimes last for years. When the rains fall, the lakes and rivers refill with water to rehydrate the eggs - and live fish emerge. The eggs are actually preserved and remain viable throughout the natural dehydration that takes place.

Comments about Honest Kitchen Verve Dehydrated Dog Food:

In my experience, The Honest Kitchen is the best food you can give your dog. Yes, it's a pain to mix together. I mix about a weeks worth ahead of time and refriderate it. My dog absolutely loved this food. I saw a huge improvement in his skin and coat and overall energy level. I can't say enough positive things about this food.

I like to alternate the Honest Kitchen Embark with the Verve so that there is a rotation of a protein source in my dog's diet. This is easily digestible, transports well, stays fresh, and a great value.

Comments about Honest Kitchen Verve Dehydrated Dog Food:

I read an analysis of dehydrated foods in THE WHOLE DOG JOURNAL, where I discovered the Honest Kitchen products. I was using canned food mixed with kibble. This is much healthier, with no canning residual issues. Honest Kitchen has several varieties....find the one that meets your dog's nutritional needs for activity and breed. Verve to low activity). Easy to prepare: 1/2 cup warm water to 1/3 cup Verve. Let it sit and rehydrate for about 5 minutes. It's kind of gooey, but smells good & my dog loves it. I feed/mixed with a good quality kibble for variety, this is not overlly expensive. When I calculated the cost it came out about the same as quality canned food by the case. I make up 3 days at a time, feed one, and store the other two for use in the refridge. Easy---healthy---highly recommended

Comments about Honest Kitchen Verve Dehydrated Dog Food:

To better my dogs' health I was looking for a human grade, low fat, nutrient packed food MFG'd in the USA that I could easily prepare without having the spoilage properties of a canned food. To my delight I found Verve. I tasted it. It's pretty good. Tastes somewhat like raw veggies with a hint of beef flavor. My poodles love it including the one with chronic cholitis. It appears that he no longer has active cholitis as his poop has been perfectly normal for the last FIVE days! This is after two weeks of gradually changing over to Verve. Whats more, he likes Verve and has a lot more energy. I am now slowly converting my other two poodles to Verve. I may always have to use some canned food due to the high cost of verve. Verve is so convenient that I can prepare enough food for one day for AM and PM feedings, but could for just for one serving if needed. My tiny poodle is the only one that has to be fed by hand regardless of what I feed him. Hopefully in time he will relearn to eat by himself - that Verve is safe to eat 100% of the time.

Very fine textured, like all the HK's I've tried, so good for little guys. The green color's a bit disconcerting (all those veg), but the dogs don't notice. Expensive cf to homemade, like all dehys, but great emergency/traveling food. Probably cheaper than buying frozen raw, too.

If you're only feeding a couple of dogs, this with some raw meat/bone added would be a great diet -- better than even the best kibble!
