For cats and dogs.

Wysong Epigen represents the first important kibble pet food innovation in almost 60 years and moves conventional dry extruded pet foods much closer to the high protein meat-based, starchless foods carnivores are genetically designed for. With that, they are given greater opportunity to enjoy their full natural health. Epigen is equally appropriate for both cats and dogs.

Unique Epigen Features

  • The first extruded dry diet/kibble pet food that is Starch Free (Epigen does what "Grain Free" pet foods only pretend to do)
  • More closely resembles the food your pet is designed to eat
  • Contains an unprecedented 60+% meat and organs and over 60% protein
  • Has the natural flavor and taste that pets truly desire
  • Is replete with all the critical food elements probiotics, prebiotics, enzymes, phytonutrients, nutraceuticals, natural form antioxidants, vitamins and minerals
  • Rich in omega-3's and other essential fatty acids
  • Made in the USA at Wysong manufacturing facilities with ingredients from USDA and FDA approved domestic sources

Epigen is a word derived from the new science of Epigenetics. This field of study has proven that environmental factors, such as food, can impact genetic expression.

Simply put, how we treat and feed ourselves and our pets can not only affect health, but the health of offspring as well. This affirms the 30-year-long premise of Wysong that nutrition is a serious health matter, and not a mere opportunity for marketing, profiteering and recreation.

Rationale for Wysong Epigen

Up until now, in order to extrude and form a dry meat-containing pet food, starches from one source or another have been used. The starches gelatinize during extrusion and create a binding matrix so that the end product can hold together. But only about 30% of the formula can be meat in order for the product to form properly. The rest is predominantly starch, which is a long chain carbohydrate that breaks down into sugar in your pet’s digestive tract. This is how all dry kibble pet foods are made, in spite of clever slogans to convince you otherwise.

It is known that starch (sugar) is a prominent cause of dental disease, adult onset diabetes, and obesity in humans and pets. However, starch has more insidious effects not commonly realized. Starch sugar interferes with the metabolism of vitamin C, a critical factor to the immune system, numerous biochemical pathways, and the health of connective tissue. When heat processed in pet foods, starch sugars create organ toxic, age accelerating, and carcinogenic compounds such as acrylamides and advanced glycation end products (AGEs).

Wysong Epigen breaks from this mold with new technology that requires no starch in the extrusion process, but rather uses natural, healthy protein chains derived from vegetable and meat sources. We can now successfully extrude kibble with exceptionally high levels of meat, 60% and even greater!

This means pets can get a diet that they are genetically programmed for, and with that, greater health.

Is Starch Free Epigen just like all of the "Grain Free" pet foods?

The problem with dry extruded kibble pet foods has been that starches (poly-sugars) are a significant ingredient. Starches are not a natural component of the canine/feline diet.

In spite of marketing efforts that would have you believe otherwise, Grain Free diets do not contain more meat, nor are they more natural or more akin to what dogs and cats eat in the wild. Grain Free products have only removed grains in favor of other starch ingredients. Taking out the more nutritious wheat, rice, and other "grain" ingredients and replacing them with potato, tapioca, peas and the like doesn't actually make the diet any more natural or genetically appropriate. Think about it… are potato and tapioca any more natural to canines and felines than wheat, corn, and brown rice? Do wild cats and dogs forage for potatoes and roam far and wide in search of tapioca and peas? Of course not.

The underlying issue -which is that carnivores are not designed to consume a constant diet of starch -remains unaddressed.

Our patented Epigen returns truth to the pet food arena and changes the market by exposing the Grain Free myth for what it is. Epigen does what Grain Free diets have only pretended to do - Epigen removes starches, is 60% protein and 60+% meat and organs, and is the most genetically appropriate dry kibble diet in history.

No more "Grain Free" and "no this-or-that ingredient" deceptions.

The fact that dry pet diets contain starches (polysugars) is being hidden from consumers by clever distractions. Rather than make fundamental changes in manufacturing and actually remove starches and sugars, slogans are used. Some claim meat as their first ingredient, others have "no-this-or-that ingredient," with the newest and perhaps most widely used catch phrase being "grain free." All such slogans are intended to convince consumers that such foods are predominantly meat and absent starch and sugar, but they aren’t.

All extruded pet foods contain carbohydrates and starches in one form or another – rice, oats, barley, corn, other grains, potato, peas, tapioca, etc. Such ingredients are used to decrease costs (starches are cheaper than meats), and, as explained, to enable the final kibble to stick together (to form a binding starch matrix). Regardless of the starch ingredient used, such starch-based pet foods are all equally foreign and unnatural to companion animals who are genetically designed for a diet high in meat and fat, and low in starches/carbohydrates.

This does not mean such diets are harmful – unless, and this is an important unless – they are fed continuously at every meal. The problem is, nearly the entire pet food industry, Wysong being an exception, advises the unhealthy practice of feeding one food meal after meal, day after day. It is all justified by the myth that processed pet foods are "complete and balanced." Such singular feeding of starch-based pet foods sets the stage for a host of chronic degenerative diseases later in life: arthritis, diabetes, obesity, dental deterioration, skin disorders, allergies and sensitivities, auto immunities, cancer, heart and other organ failure, and generalized loss of vitality.

Don’t be fooled – "Complete and balanced," "grain free," "gluten free," "no corn," "no wheat," etc. does not mean more meat, nor does it mean less starch and sugar than conventionally extruded foods that have been on the market for sixty years.

Epigen is the first conventional pet product to truly break from the starch handcuffs and thus liberate your pet’s health potential.

Epigen Ingredients Explained*

The nutrient-rich protein sources in the formula also permit the binding and shaping of the kibbles. This is in contrast to using starches — as in all other dried extruded foods — which can be very detrimental to health and contain no associated nutraceutical value. The plant materials in the formula are minor components but add considerable nutritional and nutraceutical value. Their consumption by carnivores mimics the incidental consumption of such materials through occasional grazing and by eating the ingesta of their herbivorous prey.

Organic Chicken: Fresh

Chicken Meal*: precooked and dried to enable higher levels of meat

Chicken Giblets*: hearts, livers, gizzards

*The above ingredients encompass the entire chicken minus feathers, heads and feet. This replicates as closely as possible what carnivores would eat in the wild.

Vegetable Protein (consisting of one or more of the following: Potato Protein, Rice Protein, Corn Protein, Wheat Protein): By special processing, the starches are removed. The remaining proteins and other important nutrient elements are then incorporated into Epigen. The long protein chains help shape and bind the kibbles so that starches do not have to be used.

Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols as a source of Vitamin E): This rich source of essential fatty acids is enrobed on the product after it has been extruded so the fats are not subject to the product's cook processing. To keep the fats stable, natural antioxidants are used and we also use a proprietary process to saturate the fat with nitrogen to force the oxidation producing oxygen out. These fats are regularly tested to be sure they are stable and do not contribute to free radical pathology.

Eggs: A perfect protein that helps in the binding. Eggs also contain a number of other important nutrients.

Yogurt: An excellent protein to help in the binding. It also contains a number of other important nutrients and is a host to important probiotics.

Flax Seed: A source of a number of nutrients, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Apple: A source of many nutrients and fiber.

Beet Pulp: Excellent fiber and oligosaccharides that exert a prebiotic effect.

Plums: Many nutrients, fiber, and high levels of antioxidants and anti-pathogenic factors.

Inulin: A prebiotic that encourages probiotic growth.

Dried Wheat Grass Powder and Dried Barley Grass Powder: These two grasses contain a wealth of nutrients at a stage when they are maximized and most bioavailable.

Krill Oil: A dense and clean source of marine omega-3 fatty acids.

Dried Kelp: A particularly rich source of trace minerals.

Taurine: An essential amino acid that can be destroyed in heat processing.

Oregano Extract, Sage Extract and Rosemary Extract: These three herbs exert potent antioxidant and preservative effects.

Probiotic Microorganisms (Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactococcus lactis, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus lactis): Probiotic organisms that exert a number of health benefits as well as anti-pathogen effects.

Ascorbic Acid: Antioxidant activity both in the food and in the body.

Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin Supplement, Manganese Proteinate, Calcium Pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Copper Proteinate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin A Acetate, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement: These vitamins and minerals are in their most bioavailable forms. The proteinates are chelates that enhance mineral absorption. Although all these micronutrients are in the ingredients themselves, processing diminishes their levels and thus fortification is wise. Additionally, by fortifying, higher levels can be achieved to exert health benefits and overcome the stresses of modern living, toxin exposure, and long-standing deficiencies. The safety and benefits of such fortification is supported by hundreds of thousands of scientific studies.

Feeding Guide

Epigen may be used as a single meal, or as a top dress to other foods to boost quality protein and other nutrient levels. Any sudden change in diet may result in digestive disturbances. Wysong Epigen is a unique formulation, and should be gradually introduced. Over a period of 15 days, mix Epigen with the present diet beginning at about 10% and then gradually increase proportions. If difficulties arise, return to a smaller percentage and try again.

The amount fed should be adjusted to maintain an ideal body weight. Do not overfeed, regardless of the pet’s eagerness. Over consumption leading to digestive upset is the most common difficulty pets have adjusting to this highly concentrated, unique nutritional formulation.

Wysong advises against feeding any one pet food exclusively. Feeding one food fosters the development of ingredient intolerances (allergies) and other health ailments. You would never eat one food exclusively, and neither should your pet.

Always keep fresh, pure water available and offer plenty of fresh air, sunshine, exercise, and big doses of your tender loving care.

The following amounts suggested should be decreased in proportion to the amount of supplementation with fresh whole foods. Additionally, factors such as stress and amount of activity may make it necessary to adjust the amount of feeding. If fed singularly on any given day, the following general instructions apply.

Weight of Dog 10 lbs 20 lbs 40 lbs 60 lbs 80 lbs
Daily Feeding 2/3 cup 1 1/2 cups 2 1/2 cups 3 3/4 cups 4 3/4 cups
Weight of Cat 5 lbs 10 lbs 15 lbs 20 lbs
Daily Feeding 1/4 cup 1/2 cup 3/4 cup 1 cup

Comments about Wysong Epigen Starch-Free Dry Dog & Cat Food:

I feed this product to my cat. He was suffering with urinary issues. Before this food, he was eating either Origen Grain Free, Blue Buffalo Grain Free, or Instinct. He was not using his litter box and in obvious pain. I took him to the vet and they could not clearly give a diagnosis so they sent him home with antibiotics, dasuquin, science diet, and pain killers. I was not happy about the idea of feeding science diet. My cat was not happy about eating it. If given the choice, he chose the Origen over the Science Diet and cry for food even with a serving of SD in front of him. I took the SD away. After the antibiotics ran out, his discomfort came back. He was peeing outside the litter box. I purchased Wysong Epigen along with Natural Pet Kidney Support Plus for Cats. I feed these products (along with the dasuquin) and I have seen a HUGE improvement in my cat. I cannot be sure 100% which product is working, but I will continue this method since it works. My cat is 8 and is acting like a kitten again. He wants to play both in the morning and at night. He runs around the house like the wild miniature house tiger that he is. He seems happy and more loving. I recommend Epigen to others. When I get a dog, I plan on feeding it Epigen as well. That way I only have to have one bag of food for both the cat and dog :)

I have tried for many years to address the special allergy issues of my Portuguese Water dog. She is Highly allergic to starch! There is much on the market today that claims to be "starch free", but is in reality not what it claims! Wysong has been a life saver for my dog, Sofia Mae. She is healthy, happy and itch free once again. Can't recommend it more highly!

I was looking for another food that my cats would not get bored eating. This comes in chicken, fish and venison. It is a very healthy choice for my cats, who tend to have health issues. You don't eat the same foods every day, why should your pets?? My cats also get canned food every day too.

We travel and camp a lot! We only have so much frig/freezer space for a raw diet in the RV so when this food was recommended to me by a trusted friend I got it! What a great product, dog loves it and doesn't take up a lot of space in the RV! A mix of Addiction Bushtail (with a dose of fresh veggies and occasional variety) have made my Cairn a happy, healthy traveler! (our cats love it, too)

I can't tell you how much I've spent the past few years trying to find a HEALTHY cat food that both my cats will eat. Usually if one of them likes something, the other will turn up their nose and look at me with a hurtful expression like I've doomed them to starvation. I'm quite shocked yet very pleased that both cats clamor for Epigen every day. It's a little expensive for my budget, but they don't need much and seem to be more satisfied after eating it as well[...]
