I have the Platinum Drinkwell and I love it and my cats love it. In an earlier post the user stated they have a problem with mold on the motor. Don't let this deter you from buying as this is likely due to not cleaning the unit on a regular basis. As with any watering system, mold will accumulate if you don't clean it. Frankly this will happen if you leave a jug of water sitting for a long time. You also have to clean and rinse the motor per the included instructions along with the rest of the unit to keep the waterer running to top specs. My cats are now drinking too much water they are so attracted to this system. I have 3 and have to fill the resevoir every other day. The instructions suggest cleaning the system on a weekly basis and changing the filter every 6-8 weeks. And no I don't work for them. LOL! I just found that this seems to work in keeping the water fresh and the unit working it's best. The Freshest water will also help keep your pet healthy.

Cons: Not many. The pros outweigh them The platinum should come with a larger resevoir for multiple pets. The gallon and 1/2 is just not enough for 3. They are going through this every other day and I bought it to cover out of town trips. It can be a chore to be diligent with cleaning and changing the filter, but it's worth it to see them happy. You also have to be careful replacing the resevoir without spilling upside down, but you get used to it.

I have witnessed a one time use of the fountain and it was after I had given up on it (after 2 wks) and had it unplugged. They show absolutely no interest in drinking from it when water is active.

I purchased this water fountain about two months ago, after one of my six cats actually became blocked(couldn't urinate). If you're looking to encourage your cats to drink more water, this is definitely the answer..especially if your kitties are attracted to sounds. Many of my cats just can't say no to the sound of the running water and I see HUGE clumps in the litter pans..lol..This fountain flows like a faucet(not down a "slide" like the other brand) and I believe this makes it more appealing. Also, I've been disassembling the fountain and popping it into the dishwasher for cleaning with no problems. Just be sure your water's temp isn't set too high & it should be fine. Well hydrated felines here!

I like this product. I think I was misinformed how to order the bottom part that attaches to the fountain itself. Because i have three Golden retrievers, it appeared to make sense to order the extra capacity reservoir but it appeared on the ad online to order it only with the standard sized fountain and really need the bigger sized drinking bowl.'
it is a much cleaner way for my goldens to drink their water. It is fresher and so nice not having to change the water 5 times a day!!! It took a bit for them to get use to, but once they did, they actually drink more and i know it is refreshing water and not stagnated .
Would also be nice if it was a glass conatiner and not all plastic. Just a thought for plastic is not as lasting to me as i would like to put in dishwasher and sterilize etc.
would recommend this product overall to any large or small animal pet owner.
One note, i need to figure out a better way to empty unit and transfer it to sink for i loose alot of water as i do that transferring!!
Great concept and think all dog and cat owners need this.

Better than standing water

I've had two drinkwells over the years. I thought I broke the motor on the old one (from trying to pull the hair out that was wrapped around the rotor), but my dad managed to fix it. It's at my parents house and still working. As another reviewer mentioned, the motor can burn out if the water level gets too low, but you can buy (directly from the company only) a replacement motor. My current problem is mildew! I don't know how to control this. No matter what, though, this seems to be the most durable of the pet fountains, and running water is always better than still. Many cats prefer running water. Also, you WILL want the add-on resevoir; otherwise, you'll be refilling the fountain every day just to stop the slurpy noise that occurs when the water level gets too low.

This was well worth the money. My cats loved it and would actually stop bothering me for water from the sink. The only thing I didn't really like was cleaning it until I discovered that you can take it apart and put it into the dishwasher. Another thing to be aware of is to take care of the water levels. I forgot about the fountain for a week and the motor actually burned into my carpet--thus the demise of my 4+ year fountain. Unfortunately, I cannot find a similar type of pump that fits into the fountain. I bought two other cheaper fountains since, and both have broken before the end of 3 months. So, in my experience, the drinkwell was really the best and I recommend it to anyone with finicky cats.

Hard to find the filters
By TriciaVerified Purchaser from Raleigh, NC on 12/26/2006
Pros:
Running water
Cons:
Maintenance
Best Uses:
Cat

This was an okay product in that it worked as described however it was difficult to find the filters and the filters had to be changed often or it would get grimey. It seems like a good idea but we went back to getting fresh water from the faucet every morning.

Excellent drinking fountain for cats!
By The Other MommaVerified Purchaser from Lilburn, Georgia on 10/9/2006
Pros:
Animal Likes It, Good Value
Best Uses:
Cat

Our six cats love this fountain! It took just a couple of minutes for some of them to dive in for a drink, a couple of days for others who were a bit more skeptical. Some like to drink out of the pool, some right out of the spout, but I'm sure they all appreciate the fresh, clean water they obtain from it. (We've heard no complaints!) It's easy to keep filled; I need to take it apart to clean it, which I could do without, but it's pretty easy to do. It's also fun to watch our "kids" playing in it with their paws from time to time.
