I have used this product on my dogs a couple times and have been unable to determine if it helped them or not until I used this product on myself and my family on an all day hiking trip in the dense woods. It worked! Not one bug pestered or bit. Fantastic alternative to chemical repellents! Smells great too! I highly recommend!

Good Product - Needs Improvement
By Roscoe The DogVerified Reviewer from ME on 7/27/2009

This product works well to defend bugs, but the spraying sound of the bottle and the harsh smell bothers the dog. He now runs at the site of the bottle. Overall, I would recommend this product to someone if they plan to administer it in a different manner and were prepared to put it on everyday. The product wears off once the animal is wet, but does seem effective while on.

I know this keeps mosquitos away, as I have used this on myself. I find the spray is easier to apply than the oil and is more effective because you can apply more evenly. However, the oil needs to be applied almost daily.

I administer this once a week after taking my Dalmatian off Frontline (which I'm convinced caused nerve degeneration in her rear left leg) It seems to work effectively for keeping the fleas away even here in Hawaii. However, she is prone to skin irritation foliculitis which causes brown spots and course fur and massive shedding. I had eliminated this condition with a raw diet, oils and kelp help and the brown spots completely went away (which I was told never would because it is a stain on the skin from the condition) She's not had a single break out of folicultis since I started her on the all natural stuff about 8 months ago until I started spraying her with this. Now the brown spots are back and she's shedding like crazy. I don't want to go back to the Frontline so I guess it's a trade off on which condition I'd rather have.

We purchased this spray along with the Herbal Defense Shampoo and Condtioner. We bathed and dried all 3 dogs and then used the spray 1-2 times per week. For a couple of months the combination seemed to keep fleas at bay as well as the Frontline had. But our dogs have been scratching non-stop for the last week. No matter how much we bathe or spray them, it is not keeping the fleas off. Now they have irritated, red skin from the bites and I have to purchase something to help with that. I really love the idea of not using pesticides on my dogs and hope we can knock the fleas out with natural products only...but it will take more than the shampoo, condtioner and spray to do it in the South in this kind of flea season. Perhaps this combo will be sufficient the rest of the year.

This product really works for both you and your dogs. When I've sprayed them with this bugs stay away. Even for myself...I spray myself with it when I'm outside and I don't even get a mosquito bite. I forgot to spray myself once and I came in covered with bites. My dogs don't like to be sprayed with it (even though it smells pleasant) and we place a good game of chase (but it's good exercise!) before I'm able to spray them well but it's definitely worth it (no side effects). I highly recommend this product and will continue to purchase it.

I bought this shampoo (also the conditioner, spray, and supplemental tablets) because we not only hike outside all summer (mosquitoes, flys, gnats and ticks), but we needed to travel to Illinois where there are fleas and mosquitoes (and we do not use any chemical preventatives). The shampoo lathers and cleans nicely and leaves my dogs' coats shiny (Bernese Mountain Dog, retriever mix). Bugs are repelled by the scent (I refresh with the spray before outings) and we didn't bring home any unwanted friends from Illinois. My kids don't really like the smell on the dogs, but I don't mind it. The kids like to sit by the dogs on outings because bugs stay away from them too. It is a citronella smell.

Didnt work for me and my dog!
By MoVerified Purchaser from Delran, NJ on 7/10/2009

I really wanted this to work because I didnt want to rely on the pesticides...but my dog still got fleas! I used this product in conjuntion with the Herbal Defense shampoo and conditioner along with the All in One Flea Rememdy powder for my home. So I dont understand what went wrong. I also sprayed my dog numerous times after finding the fleas and they did not die. This product was used by me several times a week since the smell fades quickly...so I'm baffled. During my 2 month trial period of using the products, my dog did not pick up any ticks so that's great.

Sorry Natural Pet, I was very excited about using this product on my 16 yr old cat that has skin issues. I sprayed on him and it smelled like there were 500 citronella candles lit up in my kitchen. The smell was so strong I thought I was going to be sick. I instantly gave my poor kitty a bath. He still stinks a bit, but it is a lot better. I highly recommend this for pets that aren't in the house much...definitely not for indoor cats. Also do not spray on your hands and then wipe down the cat, my hands are still stinky and I washed about 10 times. I'm keeping it just in case I ever need to kill some bugs outside.

We use the product on our 2 Border Collies. The bugs are pretty bad this time of year in FL, so our dogs needed something to protect them when they are outside. I sprayed it once, and it lasted for about 2 weeks. It really worked! Our dogs stopped scratching while they were outside!

We have been battling fleas for two months now. I purchased this product to help repel the fleas. But the fleas are still there. I have been bathing them and spraying them and the fleas are still attracted to the pets. The scent of the spray is overwhelming. It has a very strong lemon and cedar scent. If I were a flea I wouldn't want to be on the dogs... but these fleas don't seem to mind it.

This spray is great at tick repelling. The spray bottle sound is not my dogs' favorite, but they didn't get a vote in it. If applied once a week, or a day after swimming, there are no ticks at all down from 1 or 2 a day. I can't speak for fleas (we don't get them), but it also keeps gnats and bugs off the girls in the evenings. I used it at a family picnic on all the kids legs and there were no gnats/mosquitos on anyone there either. Great product for the job.

This product is a great supplemental tick repellent. I live in a tick infested area and the popular tick products do not work for as long as they should so I spray this on in addition rather than adding more chemicals. I am afraid to give up the popular products yet because we have so much Lyme here but I am glad to have found a decent repellent.

I wanted to like this product, because it uses natural ingredients. Unfortunately it did not work for my dogs or cats. It did not kill any of their fleas. Maybe because we live in the humid Deep South, our fleas are worse.

Only Natural Pet Store Response:This product is a repellant, so its best used in warding off new fleas after you have killed existing ones. We hear from our customers, depending on where in the country you are, you may need a few tactics to kill fleas completely.

I do not like to use chemicals for pest control on my 2 hairless Chinese Cresteds. They were getting eaten alive by something unseen on our daily walks, perhaps sand fleas. This product does what it says, it repels fleas and ticks and now, for the brief time that my small dogs are outside, nothing bites them when I use this product. I only need to spray their legs once a week for our first walk after a bath. It does make us sneeze briefly while spraying, but a small price to pay for the natural and safe protection it provides.

The product does work, but the smell is very overpowering for one of my dogs, that she will run and hide when I bring out the bottle. I do find it most effective to rub into hands so that the overspray does not get into eyes and mouth or hold it very close to skin when you spray and rub it in all over their body. I even took a bag of ticks (that I pulled off my dogs) and sprayed one spray of the product into it. The ticks ran away from the odor and eventually died. The problem is that it needs to be sprayed on daily or more often as in the case of my dogs as they run in water and tall grass everyday. Not an easy task to do when they run away from me when I get out the product!

I purchased this product after reading such good reviews. I bought this together with the herbal defense shampoo and conditioner.

I spray my 2 chihuahuas with the product whenever the scent seems to wear off. About once or twice a week.

The scent is quite strong for my dogs, they don't like the spraying either. Best way is to apply this by hand and smooth it all over their body.

I spray this inside their bags and sweaters too.

They go out almost everyday, take walks on parks and have not taken any fleas or ticks home since.

It's been several months now and I still haven't used up my first bottle.

Spray on your pet; do NOT get it in their eyes. Has a pump spray but our girls are not real fond of it. Smells great to humans but it does have a strong scent which seems to upset the girls when first sprayed. Best if sprayed on your hands and then put on dog. Kills fleas instantly when sprayed directly. We live in a heavily infested humid state for mosquitos and it does seem to help repel them if used diligently.

I sprayed EVERYTHING- my mattress the rugs, couch, the pet bedding, my dog and the cats and it really worked. Within a few days my home was flea free. I did also use the Sentry spray around the windows and outside.

The smell is pleasant but a bit strong at first though not as strong as other products I've tried. Open windows helped.

I have not found 1 tick on her since I started using the spray, and I was removing a few a week. While visiting my friend on a farm in Virginia her dogs were constantly plagued by the horse flies, but my dog didn't have a fly on her. My friend was so impressed so I sent her a bottle to try for her pets.

I found it a useful tool in the arsenal of fighting fleas. That is one lesson learned this summer, natural things work best when used with other natural things..like lime in the(southern acidic) yard , shorter cut grass, d-limonene sprayed indoors, DE dusting of crevices in furniture ,fleabusters powder in carpets, I am so done with the chemical toxins.
None of my animals reacted badly to this natural spray, nor did I - my sinuses do not scream when I smell this even in large amounts (applied to 3 dogs,1 cat) a huge plus!!
The spray was not lasting a whole week, I had to use it every day for awhile, it is great for spot treatment of fleas, it knocks them out.It smells great.

That's when I had to go through the Lime disease treatment of antibiotics for many weeks. At the urging of both my Vet and Doctor Ben went on Front Line. It worked okay. He still got an occasional tick, maybe one a week, but I didn't get any more. I really hated putting those chemicals on him.
So this summer I did on online research and found this product. I didn't think we had anything to loose, so I tried it. It works phenomenal - better than Front Line did. As long as Ben is treated he doesn't get ticks. NOT A ONE! What can be better than that? I don't know how it works on fleas, because Ben has never had one. I spray him about 20 squirts almost everyday.

This non-chemical pet spray keeps the bugs off for days! Not only is the price cost-efficient, but the lasting effect of keeping bugs/bites away from your dog for long periods of time & without harmful chemicals is spectacular. Smells great too! Thanks for longer summer playdays rolling in the grass without worries!!

What I really enjoy about this herbal defense is that it even works on people and the fact that when I spray it on my dog, it does not irritate her. She actually stands still and allows it to be sprayed for her protection. For the first time my dog can tolerate the smell. Thee absolute best thing about this spray is that the first ingredient listed is NEEM. That happens to be a very effective and important ingredient. WOW!!!
Yes, yes, yes, you have to spray it on your pet on a daily basis, however, something that your pet can tolerate like this makes having to spray it daily not such a horrible thing.

Besides, if you purchase two bottles like we did, it will last longer!!! We spray her legs and her underside, but steer clear of her private area (underside) We also spray her back and tail. It's just great and healthy, natural and effective.

I had one of my cats almost die from a monthly topical flea treatment, threw the rest away and decided to use something all natural. I have 2 dogs and 2 inside cats, this was easy and fast to use on all of them. So far, no fleas. Only con is you need to spray on every one to two weeks, small price to pay. Would recommend this to everyone. Much safer than some of the topicals.

It smells great, it works great on fleas and ticks. We have had NO fleas or ticks in quite some time. I cannot say enough about this product. We have been using it for several years now and will not go back to using anything else.

I have a six month old American Bulldog. He seems to be highly irritated by mosquito bites. The bites swell up to about the size of a dime. I ordered this product to take on a camping trip and it did not work. It smelled great (he hated it), but he was practically eaten alive. He was covered in bumps an hour after I applied the spray. I live in Wisconsin and the mosquito is our state bird, but the spray did not keep my puppy from looking like he had a disease. I was all for the natural product, but will be returning to the products that I know work for the health of my dog.

I tried this product because my Golden Retriever was being bothered by flies and gnats. He has had allergies the last few years and I wanted to get something that would not irritate his skin.
Not only does it work and smell good (I use it on me too) but he's no longer itching - at all. It seems to have helped his allergies as well, which could have been partially caused by bug bites.
I see the bugs hoover around him but they don't land. He can sleep on the uncovered part of the deck in peace now. The spray and the allergy relief may be coincidental - since I also use skin supplements but it is a definite help. Thanks for the assistance!

The only thing I was a bit disappointed with is I live in a high tick infested area. I spray my dog whenever we walk (which is daily unless weather does not permit). It doesn't seem to repel the ticks as much as I would like it to but it does keep them from biting.

I decided to go all natural this season with flea & tick control because one of our pets had a reactions to other topical products. I use the spray in conjunction with the shampoo, conditioner and garlic tabs. So far it seems to be working. I have not found a flea or tick on any of my dogs. Be careful not to spray near their faces, they don't seem to like the odor when it is first applied. I spray it on my hands and then rub their heads. The first day the odor of the spray is quite strong but fades after a short time and is actually clean smelling. My non shedding dogs get bathed often so they benefit from the shampoo and cond. My large breed dog does not bathe often so I can honestly say it's the spary that's working.

I just started using this with the Herbal Defense shampoo/cond after I found a tick on my dog. It seems like a great natural way to repel ticks/mosquitos. The spray smells wonderful like patchouli and lasts a few days. Its not by any means overwhelming. He actually smells like he had a fresh bath. Important- the bottle says you can apply once a week but I find if you live in a high tick area, you need to re-apply every other day with at least one spray on the top of the body, one on the ears, and one on the belly/paw area. Also, make sure to re-apply after they get wet! I found a tick on his paw once while he has been on this- so its not perfect. But much better than the harsh chemicals in Frontline/Advantage!

I began using this Herbal Defense spray along with the shampoo and conditioner about a month ago in an attempt to go a more natural route in preventing fleas & ticks this year. I also give the ONPS brand brewers yeast & garlic tabs. So far so good! I find that the combination of products has definitely been repelling ticks very well, but it hasn't truly been tested against fleas since it's not quite warm enough for them to be in full effect yet. I have also noticed it helps a lot at repelling flies as well! Normally on a hot day flies will land on my dogs and hitch a ride, but with this stuff they won't even land on them. It does have an herbally/slightly citronella like smell to it, but honestly it is not bad at all. I normally HATE smells like that but I don't mind it at all and I sleep with my 2 dogs who I use it on every night. It makes their fur softer than any other shampoo we've used too. I also use this on our inside/outside cat once a week and though he hates being sprayed (the product itself doesn't irritate him at all, he doesn't act like he doesn't like the smell or try to lick it all off, he just doesn't like getting wet and holding him down to do it isn't good for a cat's ego you know ;)) I will continue to use this on him. We haven't found a single tick on him yet this year though we've found several crawling around on us and in our house! I think this is doing a great job!

I live in Georgia were fleas and ticks are a real problem. I bought this spray before we went camping along with the shampoo (love it too). I have used this product on my 2 Chihauhaus with great success. We do alot of camping and I have younger children that are always kissing and holding the dogs so I did not want to use a chemical like Frontline. I knew natural oils work at repelling fleas and insects so I decided to give this a try. I used in conjunction with the Brewers Yeast tablets too. The spray has a strong scent that will take a while to wear off, which was the only drawback. But it worked great and I did not need to reapply it during our 2 day trip. I can take the smell knowing that my animals and my kids are not dealing with harmful chemicals. No more fleas and ticks!

Bugs noticeably avoid any pet sprayed with this. We have problems with mosquitoes, fleas and, hornets and wasps. I spray it on my clothing before I go outdoors. Dog and I have not been bitten when I apply this spray. It has a strong odor, so I dilute it by 1/3 in the solution sprayed directly on the dog's and cat's coats and it still works well. I've used other brands of herbal sprays purchased from pet stores. This is the best I've used.

this spray works MUCH BETTER THAN FRONTLINE! with frontline she came home with about 20 fleas each time; with this spray, it was only 2 or 3!

i am very impressed and feel much better about using this product, than one that is simply putting chemicals into their bloodstream to keep away a parasite that they have lived with for thousands of years!

pair it with the shampoo!

One of our cats is a mosquito magnet. We try to keep her in during the Summer but every now and then she bums-rushes us at the door and bolts.
Within a few minutes there is a cloud of mosquitoes buzzing her. I've used this for a while and it's working. No more bites on her ears, which she scratches until they bleed. She was feral when we rescued her and she's all about going outside. With this product we can let her burn off some steam outside and eliminate the health risk. If you have cats that go outside, even for the short periods ours does, I'd pick up a bottle of this spray. I spray it on a cotton ball and dab her ears. It works.

My dog has never had fleas until this year. She is 6-1/2 yrs. old and I panicked since I also own 3 cats. Once she had a bath(in an all natural shampoo since fleas do not need caustic products to kill them), Herbal Defense prevented further attacks. Since she has a long dense coat, it was necessary to rub it in well. It isn't oily or greasy which I appreciated. I even sprayed my legs before going into my garden to fend off mosquitos and knats. Worked great! Didn't mind the natural lemon/citronella scent.

This product is very effective. We live next to a wetlands area infested with ticks. My dog also goes to a large park every week. I use Frontline Plus because of our high risk, but I still would find 2-3 ticks on him after our walks/runs, and sometimes found them in the house when they bit him and dropped off! With this spray I still check him and do not find ticks at all. The smell is a little strong (we both usually sneeze when we apply it) but it's not that bad. And the smell is well worth it!

The dogs don't seem to mind it at all, although it sometimes makes them sneeze if sprayed near the face. It does work best when used daily. We love it for many reasons. Who wants to pet a dog covered in chemicals? We have tried other products of this type from the stores but this one works the best of all we have tried. I cannot say enought about it. We are completely satisfied and will continue to buy it.

This is a wonderful product. I just spray a little on my German Shepherd Dog's belly and ears, and we can walk and play for hours! (I don't even have to spray every part of her body.) The mosquitos, gnats, and flies leave us alone. We live in Minnesota, where the joke is, "our state bird is the mosquito", so if it's effective here, it's worth buying! The scent is pleasant, and I spray some on myself as well...it beats the odor of harsh repellents. I definitely will be buying more of this.

No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This is the worst smelling flea and tick removal I have ever used. It smells like the worst old lady perfume. It has permeated my house and even though I washed my dog three times, he still smells like this. I'm sure it may be very effective against fleas and ticks, but it smells so horrible, I would rather choose other methods. If you are sensitive to smells or have allergies, I would even more highly recommend you not use this. I have been sneezing non stop, coupled by a terrible headache since using this product. I can't imagine if I would have also used the shampoo that is recommended to go with it. It may work for some people, but I wanted to share my thoughts on my reaction.

Finally something that really works!
By Ricco, DB & MBVerified Purchaser from Sandy Flea Free, Florida on 3/20/2007
Pros:
Effective, Gentle, Good Value, Long-Lasting
Best Uses:
Reduces Annoying Chewing, Reduces Bug Bites, Reduces Scratching
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Ricco, our 3yr old, 92lb lab/boxer, and Hubby & I love this product. Excellent natural deterrent for all kinds of biting/annoying bugs and fleas. Ricco's allergic to flea bites. Ricco's hair grew back in and he's stopped chewing, licking & biting his back legs & stopped scratching his belly. We all sleep much better too! Easy to use, nice misting spray, do not need to over use, follow the directions. Suggest using in a ventilated area. I like the smell; it is 'different' - kind of earthy clove like. We still use Frontline, but highly recommend using this Natural Herbal Defense Spray against biting bugs & fleas as well. We're showing Ricco & your product to our vet today! Thanks much!

Works GREAT!
By Reno ScottieVerified Purchaser from Reno, NV on 12/8/2006
Pros:
Effective, Gentle
Best Uses:
All pets and people

I used this on our dogs for Buffalo Gnats (No See Ums - but you do see them!). They bite and leave welts. People sometimes have to go to the hospital they are so bad.
They bite the dogs on their belly. Sprayed this on and rubbed in a bit and NO BITES.
Doesn't smell so bad - an herbal scent - so I used it on my ears, neck, etc. Worked just fine - and no chemicals.
Thank you.

Amazing Stuff!!
By Danaher Street Zoo KeeperVerified Purchaser from Ludington, MI on 10/30/2006
Pros:
Good Value, High Quality

We have an autumn flea problem. Not one flea all summer long but now we are infested. My dog brings them in and they get on the cats. The biggest problem is having 4 brand new baby kittens with fleas. The vet said there was no treatment for them except just picking them off. I got this product because it stated safe for kittens. I used on my 28 day old babies. Less than 5 minutes later - no fleas! WOW - does this work super fast and they did great. It didn't make them sick or anything. They smell funky but are bug free!! Thank you so much. I have used it on all of our cats and the dog too. Thank you so much. I have recommended it to all of my friends & the vet too!!
