We recently bought 2 all-wool area rugs. As soon as they were unrolled, most of our 10 cats decided it was an ideal medium for scratching. We were pretty shocked as to how much and how quickly our new 'investment' was being shredded. So, we sadly rolled up the rugs and ordered this product with fingers crossed. As soon as it arrived, we unrolled the rugs and thoroughly misted them (one large and one small). Of course, all the cats were curious about the return of the unrolled rugs and as soon as the rugs were not so damp, many decided to lay down on them BUT NO SCRATCHING. A major relief! The next day, just for insurance purposes we misted the rugs again. Sadly, this pretty much emptied the bottle. About 10 days has passed and the cats periodically feel to stretch their limbs on the rugs but only rarely have reverted to the old scratching behavior.
We also applied some of the product to vertical wood areas that the cats have been shredding (banister posts, etc). The product's effectiveness seems far less on wood. Maybe it needs more frequent spraying.
The other relative downside is the cost of using the product. We are in an 1,100 sf home... not that large and at this rate, would probably use 2 or 3 of these bottles per month. That represents a pretty high annual cost. We would hope and suggest that the manufacturer of this good product would sell it in a concentrated form and let us add the water ourselves... hopefully saving some money in the process.
This product did not work at all. I used it 2-3 times per day for over a week in multiple areas of the house and it didn't stop the cats from scratching a single place where I had administered the product.
I have expensive non-washable rugs that my cats were using as scratching posts. Rather than spay directly on the rugs I use a few pieces of inconspicuous cloth & place on the rugs. That way I don’t take any chances of staining. Works great!
For some obscure reason Mehitabel (my cat) who NEVER has chewed anything, started chewing on the padded arms of my scooter. Two applications and bingo, no more interest. Unfortunately I have to order two new arms, but I have the answer before the problem arises.
THANK YOU
I've tried other organic scratch deterrents, but my kitty only rolled his eyes at me and scratched away. This product works very well; my cat is much less inclined to go back to the same area to scratch. If it's a really bad situation, do this: place tin foil around or on the area being scratched, spray the scratch deterrent and I guarantee your pet will stay away! No need to get the animal(s) declawed!! (keep claws trimmed)
