Please Note: The Honest Kitchen has updated their packaging, however ingredients and quality still remain the same.

The Honest Kitchen's Keen is the newest in their line of natural, dehydrated human-grade foods for dogs. It has been developed as a penny-conscious recipe for sensitive hounds who deserve good food.

Lower in cost without compromising our values, Keen is made with a "down to earth" ingredients list that provides great low-gluten nutrition at an affordable price. Like all of Honest Kitchen's recipes, Keen is guaranteed human grade, wholesome, balanced and free of artificial additives, by-products or fillers of any kind. It is suitable for adult maintenance and for gluten-sensitive pets.

New Green Packaging! Honest Kitchen now has eco-friendly packaging! It reduces materials usage and waste with a fine, recyclable 'minimalist' and unprinted barrier bag that efficiently protects the food inside. The bag is enclosed in a 100% recycled box made from unbleached kraft paperboard. The box is printed with soy-based inks and the finished product is 100% biodegradable or recyclable again after use, too.

The Honest Kitchen makes wholesome, natural food for dogs using gentle dehydration, a unique new approach to canine nutrition. These foods help you create delicious and nutritious meals made with real, recognizable, and human-grade ingredients that are ready to prepare and serve at home. Simply add warm water to rehydrate, and you have a complete meal with USDA meat, fresh fruits and vegetables, organic flaxseed, herbs, vitamins, minerals, and organic grains (in the Verve formula).

The Honest Kitchen's dehydrated food offers many of the benefits of a biologically appropriate raw pet food diet, combined with the convenience and peace of mind of a nutritionally balanced, ready-blended product. Dehydration simply removes the moisture, which prevents decomposition. As an ancient form of preserving food, virtually all of the nutrients are left intact. This is a much fresher, and therefore healthier, approach than the extrusion process that dry kibble undergoes.

All of Honest Kitchen's dog food and dehydrated raw dog food products are formulated to meet the AAFCO nutrient profiles for dogs and you don't have to add anything to make them "complete." However, the original idea behind these diets was as a base for a raw or other fresh homemade diet and to facilitate that, they are somewhat 'lite' in terms of fat and protein, so that your own choice of raw, or cooked, meat can be added, if desired.

It is entirely a matter of personal choice (and your dog's taste!) whether you add in extra meat and other ingredients, or not. Most people with younger and more active dogs like to mix in the additional meat, and those with senior or overweight animals usually prefer to feed the organic dog food alone. The Honest Kitchen supplies pet owners with the best in fresh dehydrated raw dog food and other organic dog food products.

About Dehydration

Dehydration or drying, is one of the oldest and gentlest methods of food preservation. Food dehydration works by removing only the water content from the ingredients. All other nutrients remain, and become highly concentrated. Dried foods are extremely nutritious, easy to prepare and store, and light weight to ship.

Because dehydration takes place at moderate temperatures, the ingredients are still considered raw. The only exceptions are the meat and egg ingredients, which are dehydrated at high enough temperatures to kill any bacteria present and are therefore essentially considered "cooked." This is because they must be human-edible grade to enter Honest Kitchen's manufacturing facility.

The removal of moisture prevents enzymatic activity, which can lead to browning and decomposition of foods, and also prevents the growth of bacteria, yeast and molds. Dehydration does not actually destroy or kill the food enzymes, as occurs in baking and freezing or high pressure processing such as extrusion. Enzyme activity in dehydrated foods is simply suspended, until the food is rehydrated.

A remarkable example of the way dehydration preserves without destroying is in Africa, where scientists have discovered live fish being hatched from fish eggs, that have been dehydrated in the sun, during droughts that sometimes last for years. When the rains fall, the lakes and rivers refill with water to rehydrate the eggs - and live fish emerge. The eggs are actually preserved and remain viable throughout the natural dehydration that takes place.

Comments about Honest Kitchen Keen Dehydrated Dog Food:

My Havanese has severe allergies and has been on almost every dog food there is.I feed him raw food for his evening meal, usually turkey and sardine or rabbit. I have been feeding him dehydrated/freeze dried in the morning to accommodate a second protein as too much of one protein tends to set his allergies off. I usually feed the Honest Kitchen Brave of the Grandma Lucy's pork or rabbit. This is the first time I have tried the Honest Kitchen Keen and I wasn't sure how it would go for us as there are oats in it. My dog really likes it and so do I. So far, no residual issues from the oats and I only have to feed him 1/4 cup per meal so the value is so much better. I will buy this again.

Comments about Honest Kitchen Keen Dehydrated Dog Food:

I use the Keen food in the morning for my 14# dog. She's older, on a salt restricted diet because of her heart problems. I hide her pills in the food and she just eats them along with her food. She's had no problems adjusting to the new food. It would probably be too expensive for a big dog,but for us it's great, and no "raw meat" smell.

Our pup loves this food! We like giving it to her because we know it's healthy and trust that it was made by a comany who cares about the health of our pets. We purchased the 10lb box which we estimate should last us about 5-6 months. You definitely get your money's worth and then some!

Comments about Honest Kitchen Keen Dehydrated Dog Food:

I was feeding my 3 year old Goldendoodle another well-known dry dog food, which I had read very good things about, but then she stopped eating it one day and would just pick at it. I took her to the vet and nothing was wrong with her so I did some on-line research to see what other foods were out there. I liked this food because it's so natural and it's human grade, which I have never seen before. I also like that the large box doesn't take up as much room as a 30 lb. bag of dog food! From the first time I put the food in front of Sammy until now (two months later) she jumps around like crazy she gets so excited to eat it. She practically inhales it! As long as she is happy, I am happy!

When my dog sees this being made, he literally jumps in the air trying to get at it before the water is absorbed. He's not a picky eater to begin with but this food is definitely his favorite. I love it because I know it will digest well since it makes him eat slower due to the mushy consistency. (He usually goes back a few times to lick the bowl after he's done too!) I also love it because I can actually see the real food in it and know people tested it making it something I trust to feed my dog. I will definitely buy this again!

My dog has had skin problems for years. Although I've fed him high quality, human grade kibble, the Honest Kitchen was like the icing on the cake for his chronic itch. I mix it with my kibble to make it more economical and it's just the right touch of rawness for his allergies. Not to mention, he LOVES it!

Comments about Honest Kitchen Keen Dehydrated Dog Food:

Both my senior dauschund and corgi love this stuff! I make a slurry out of it then add in frozen veggies and sometimes a hard boiled egg. I don't care for the smell but luckily both dogs love it! Meal time is a happy time for both owner and canines. Yes, it's kind of a sticker shock but my first 10 lb box is maybe a little over half empty and it's been a couple of months. The cost of store brand dry dog food is pretty dang expensive now and this product is superior and not full of undigestable corn products, so I think it is a real value. I totally endorse this product!

This product came as a recommendation from an animal nutritionist. Our female Boxer has always had digestive issues, and we've had to rotate her food every couple of years. We mix this food with a premium dry food product in lieu of a canned product, and have her on some additional pro-biotic supplements. We love this food as a canned food substitute.
