Thorne Research Canine Geriatric Basics promotes a good quality of life in older dogs.

  • Supports healthy aging including vision and musculoskeletal support
  • Potent antioxidant support
  • Maintains healthy cognitive function
  • Promotes cardiovascular and gastrointestinal health
  • Adaptogenic herbs to promote resistance to stress

Canine Geriatric Basics provides antioxidants, botanicals, and supplemental ingredients for cardiovascular (CoQ10), musculoskeletal (ascorbic acid, calcium), GI (L-glutamine), ocular (bilberry), hepatic (lipoic acid, methionine, choline), and cognitive (acetyl L-carnitine, phosphatidylserine) support.

Older dogs have increased requirements for specific substances not provided by a balanced diet. As aging progresses, a greater number of animal health problems can arise whose duration and severity may be mitigated through targeted supplementation of health-promoting vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and plant extracts. Canine Geriatric Basics is formulated to provide this additional supplementation.

It is formulated with specific amino acids to help geriatric patients by enhancing the production of neurotransmitters. L-tyrosine produces the catecholamines dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. DL-Phenylalanine has been shown to block enkephalinase, thereby increasing the levels of endorphins and enkephalins in the central nervous system.

Canine Geriatric Basics contains flavonoids, coenzyme Q10, and other potent antioxidants for slowing oxidative damage to the aging canine body. The canine aging process may also adversely affect the brain, resulting in decreased production of neurotransmitters, decreased synaptic density, and degeneration of neuronal membrane integrity. Phosphatidylserine positively affects neuronal membranes through support of lipid membrane components and by improving the amount and function of acetylcholine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine. Acetyl-L-carnitine increases the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

Bilberry has been added for its beneficial effects on vision. Because aging animals are more susceptible to the detrimental effects of stress, the adrenal adaptogenic herbs Eleutherococcus and ashwagandha have been added to help modulate these effects.

Comments about Thorne Research Canine Geriatric Basics:

I wish I had found these vitamins sooner. They are excellent! I have been searching for a long time for vitamins for my dogs (Chihuahuas) that do not have a lot of unwanted ingredients. I was looking for a vitamin that has all of the essential, best quality vitamins, and these are perfect. They are more expensive, but worth every penny. They immediately cleared up a bowel problem (scooting on their bottoms and difficulty eliminating waste) that my dogs were experiencing, and gave them more energy--like when they were puppies. Also, they are easy to administer. I gave each one 1/4 of the contents of one capsule daily on their food--they are each about 7-8 lbs., and now they only need it two to three times a week. I am so glad I found these!
