Feeding Recommendations

As a result of the increased digestibility of a raw food diet, you are able to feed your pet less food daily. Primal's suggestion is to feed your pet based upon the 2-3% Rule. Feed your pet 2-3% of their body weight daily. Primal recommends feeding your pet twice daily, so you should divide the total daily feeding weight in half and feed once in the morning and once in the evening.

Factors such as level of activity, age, health, metabolism, and breed play a part in the necessary feeding quantities of all animals. Please be sure to monitor your pet’s dietary needs and adjust the feeding quantities accordingly. Use the table below to determine the appropriate feeding percentage based on your dog's dietary needs.

Feeding Percentages
2.0 % Weight loss or non-active dogs
2.5 % Maintain Weight
3.0 % Slight Weight Gain
3.5 % Significant Weight Gain
4.0 % Puppies (8 wks - 1 yr)
4.5 - 8.0 % Puppies (4 wks - 8 wks) *
Calculation Tips
Weigh your pet on a regular basis so you know that you are feeding the correct amount of food.

*Puppies: Primal recommends starting your puppy’s feeding percentage at 6% and adjusting up or down as necessary.

Transitioning Your Dog to Primal Raw

Transition is the most essential element of a healthy and safe change from dry kibble or canned wet food to a raw diet. Primal recommends making this transition slowly. Allow 1-4 weeks for your pet's digestive system to properly adjust from a highly processed diet to their new diet of human grade raw foods.

Begin by mixing the Canine Formula into your dog’s previous food at a ratio that your dog will tolerate (you can start with as little as 1/4 Canine Formula to 3/4 of your pet’s former food). Your dog may show some adversity to the temperature of the raw food when served directly from the refrigerator. To warm Primal Pet Foods formulas, place the feeding portion into a zipper-seal, water-tight bag and heat in a bowl of warm water. Do not use water that is too hot, as this will potentially cook the food and reduce the enzymatic properties, as well as deplete the nutrient values of the raw foods.

Gradually increase the amount of Canine Formula until your dog accepts the raw diet without the addition of any kibble or canned food.

Primal recommends the addition of digestive enzymes for the first two to four weeks of the transition period to better enable your dog to assimilate the proteins, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals contained in our formulas.

To determine how your dog’s system is accepting the new diet, monitor their stool. As you change over to a raw diet, your dog’s stool size will be greatly reduced. Stools will become small, firm and void of any offensive odor. If your dog’s stool is soft or loose as a result of the transition, introduce the raw food more slowly.

There is a 4 pound minimum and $29.95 shipping surcharge on all frozen raw food and bones orders. Additional charges may apply for air express service or very large orders. Please read the following carefully:

  • Special Packaging - All raw food and bones are shipped frozen in special styrofoam-lined boxes with dry ice. The frozen raw surcharge is to cover the cost of the dry ice and special packaging.
  • Tuesday Shipping - All frozen raw orders will ship Tuesday. To ensure that we have adequate stock to fill your order, you must place your order by midnight Sunday. Orders placed on Monday or later will ship the following Tuesday. Any backordered items will be cancelled from the order and you will not be charged. Missing items will be promptly refunded, as we are unable to reship due to perishables being handled just one day per week.
  • UPS Ground Service - All orders $79 and over ship free. All orders under $79 ship $6.99 flat rate. Delivery time frames vary depending on the state shipped to, but in most cases your delivery will be on Friday. Please view this map that shows the number of days to your location. If you are in the 3 day delivery area (green area on the map) then your order will arrive on a Friday. We strongly recommend upgrading to an express delivery service (see below) if you will not be available to receive your order and place it in the freezer at the time of delivery (we cannot offer refunds or reships on thawed food that is not received by a person at the time of delivery).
  • UPS Express Service - We do offer Overnight and 2 Day service. We encourage you to choose one of these express services if you are unable to personally receive your food at the time of delivery, which may include Saturday. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico must use 2 Day or Overnight Delivery. We cannot offer refunds or reships on thawed food that is not signed for by a person at the time of delivery.
  • Multiple Box Surcharge - Some orders weighing over 20 pounds must be shipped in more than one box and will be subject to additional surcharges of $19.95. Not all orders over 20 pounds will need to be sent in multiple boxes, and if this applies to your order we will notify you before processing it so that you can make adjustments if desired. In general, bones, medallions, and patties tend to take more room. As a guideline, the maximum a box will hold of each type of food is 34 x 1 lb. chubs or 8 x 3 lb. medallions or 6 x 6 lb. patties or 2 x 25 lb. boxes of dinner bars.
  • Delivery Instructions - Please ship to an address where someone will be available to accept the order. If this is not possible, please leave a note for the UPS delivery person on the scheduled day of delivery with instructions on where to leave it (that is not in the hot sun). The food will only stay frozen for up to 4 days from shipment, so if it is not able to be delivered or it sits outside after delivery, there is a possibility that the food will begin to thaw. We cannot accept returns or offer refunds or reships for orders that are unable to be delivered or that are not signed for by a person at the time of delivery. We are unable to send frozen raw food orders with "Shipper Release," so please leave your delivery driver a note if you think they will not leave the package with no one home.

SEPARATE RAW FOOD ORDERS - If you are ordering both frozen raw food or bones and other, non-frozen items, you will need to place two separate orders. This will prevent the non-frozen items from being delayed until Tuesday.

Comments about Primal Pet Foods Raw Dog Food:

My Border Collie is 10 months old and the pickiest eater I've ever had. I tried 11 (eleven!!) highly-recommended brands of treats and training treats and she disdainfully spits every single one out. I have not seen any excited reaction to:
    Wellness
    Taste of the Wild
    Blue Buffalo
    Acana
    Canidae
    Fromm
    Sojos freeze dried
    Earthborn Holistic

While she used to love the old beef recipe of Natural Balance Dog Food Rolls, since they've tweaked it she won't respond.

    Enter Primal Raw.

For the first time in her life, she eagerly ate the whole bowl and licked it clean. She's at a healthy weight but appears to others to be too skinny. Primal has given me the peace of mind not to worry if she misses a meal or two any more (and she doesn't). I am far more stringent about what she eats than my own rather neglected diet so of course I did the research before offering one nugget; I hope Primal keeps doing exactly what they do.

I feed three nuggets mashed into a cup of high quality dry food in the morning, and two nuggets at night. At first I purchased the freeze-dried but quickly switched to the frozen; she likes them better and they're a bit cheaper and less-messy to prepare.

This is a great food! I feed my dog the chicken version. However, just be aware that the ingredient list and nutritional info for the chicken formula have changed slightly from what is posted here. When the packaging and product size changed, so did the product. For example, the crude fat is now 11%, not 7%. Also, the omega-3 source is salmon oil, not organic flaxseed oil as it says here (not sure where that came from, since flaxseed oil wasn't an ingredient even before the change). I have no criticism of the food or the change, just want to get the most accurate info out there.

Comments about Primal Pet Foods Raw Dog Food:

After years and years of researching food brands and different types, I finally decided to try Primal! It's sold at a nearby holistic pet store and it's stored in a freezer. I tried the Chicken Formula in nugget form, and my dog absolutely loves it! She is a 3 year old terrier mix, VERY picky about kibbles and canned food. I tried feeding normal raw chicken and she wasn't too crazy about that either. The minute I offered her Primal Chicken formula, she gobbled it up in under 2 minutes, literally! I couldn't believe it. Eva has a history of urinary tract infections and crystals, and I was worried the food could trigger stones to form. She's been eating Primal for the past month now. So far, she hasn't had any more infections. She also used to have rough fur, and within days her fur was shiny and soft! Overall, she seems a lot happier and healthier and I couldn't recommend this food with more enthusiasm! Give it a try if you have been having problems with your dog's current food, it might save a lot of future frustration!

Comments about Primal Pet Foods Raw Dog Food:

I have a male Shih-tzu, Weston, who just turned 1 year in Feb '12 and he is not the 'typical' fru-fru personality type that one usually associates with this breed. He tends to prefer more game-y foods, tends to walk away from the pet store bagged dry and moist foods---even during our training sessions, he is not motivated with 'treats', just praise and verbal encouragement. He might eat something for 2 or 3 meals and not go for it again and not eat for 3 or 4 days (vet says nothing physically wrong with him---but something that is breed specific to the tzu). I believe that he thinks he really is ALL Wolf-Dog. When we go out on our long, nature, woodsy exploration walks...I get the feeling watching him foreage and track that if he could find his own raw food, he would. I don't let him catch them, but chasing rabbits and birds in the woods and trails, off the beaten path is one of his favorite activities. I had been reading on the ingredients for the raw diets and so finding the PRIMAL raw food line with the various choices (RABBIT being one, venison, pheasant---not traditional fare you'd find at commercial pet stores)---was a real gold strike!!! I put the nugget bars on his food mat and he ate with passion and gusto. So far, he goes to his food mat patiently awaiting me to put the rabbit (his favorite so far) down for his meal time. Thanks to PRIMAL!!! And hopefully this won't be one of those great products that becomes unavailable in the future. Only con is the price, but the convenience and meat selection with all the necessary ingredients makes it worth it if you can afford the choice of a raw diet.

Comments about Primal Pet Foods Raw Dog Food:

This dog food is a gift from heaven let me tell you! My little guy, Dekker (black pug) is allergic to just about everything including humans. This is the only food he can eat as he is now allergic to chicken, beef, fish, rabbit, peas, corn, gluten, wheat, and on an on. He has his eating time memorized and is excitedly awaiting his food. I would highly recommend you add the probiotics with this food if you choose to go the raw diet route. Dekker's stools look like little nuts. Not too dry or to runny - perfect. His coat is shiny, and beautiful and he is a lean, mean machine. In addition, his allergies are under control for the first time in SIX years. Thank you so much for this food. We are now trying the Venison after Dekker being on the Duck nuggets for the past year! The only down side, it travel is very challenging with this food. It's raw so you have to plan ahead. Other than that, this food is a 5 out of 5!

Comments about Primal Pet Foods Raw Dog Food:

I continue to use this awesome food. At one point rated down to 3 stars because the food seemed to become runny. I was happy to see that this was communicated to the manufacturer. [...] This has improved since the time of the review. I have used this food for years, and my dogs long outlive their counterparts. Raw is without a doubt the best thing for dogs, and if you don't have time to do it yourself, this is the next best option.
