Feeding Recommendations

  • As a result of the increased digestibility of a raw food diet, you are able to feed your cat less food daily.
  • *Feed your pet 2-3% of their body weight daily.
  • Primal recommends feeding your cat twice daily, so you should divide the total daily feeding weight in half and feed once in the morning and once in the evening.
  • Factors such as level of activity, age, health, metabolism, and breed play a part in the necessary feeding quantities of all animals.
  • Please be sure to monitor your cats dietary needs and adjust the feeding quantities accordingly.

Feeding Percentages

  • 2.0% Weight loss or non-active cats
  • 2.5% Maintain Weight
  • 3.0% Slight Weight Gain
  • 3.5% Significant Weight Gain
  • 4.0% Kittens (8 wks - 1 yr)
  • 4.5% - 8.0% Kittens (4 wks - 8 wks)*

Calculation Tips
Weigh your cat on a regular basis so you know that you are feeding the correct amount of food. Kittens: Primal recommends starting your kitten’s feeding percentage at 6% and adjusting up or down as necessary.

Transitioning Your Cat to Primal Raw

Transition is the most essential element of a healthy and safe change from dry kibble or canned wet food to a raw diet. Primal recommends making this transition slowly. Allow 1-4 weeks for your pet’s digestive system to properly adjust from a highly processed diet to their new diet of human grade raw foods.

Begin by mixing the Feline Formula into your cats previous food at a ratio that your cat will tolerate (you can start with as little as 1/4 Feline Formula to 3/4 of your pet’s former food). Your cat may show some adversity to the temperature of the raw food when served directly from the refrigerator. To warm Primal Pet Foods formulas, place the feeding portion into a zipper-seal, water-tight bag and heat in a bowl of warm water. Do not use water that is too hot, as this will potentially cook the food and reduce the enzymatic properties, as well as deplete the nutrient values of the raw foods.

Gradually increase the amount of Feline Formula until your cat accepts the raw diet without the addition of any kibble or canned food.

Due to the finicky nature of felines, transitioning to a raw food diet can be challenging. If after following Primal's recommended transition guidelines above, you are still unable to entice your cat to eat raw food, you may want to consider two other possible methods. Mix equal parts of Primal Feline Formulas with a very high quality canned food at a ratio of 50/50. After your cat begins to eat the mixture, you can gradually decrease the amount of canned food used and begin to feed a greater quantity of Primal Feline Formulas. The second option is to fast your cat for a brief period of time, usually no more than two days. Be sure to offer plenty of fresh water during the fast and attempt to feed raw food after day 1 of the fast.

Primal recommends the addition of digestive enzymes for the first two to four weeks of the transition period to better enable your cat to assimilate the proteins, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals contained in our formulas. To determine how your cat’s system is accepting the new diet, monitor their stool. As you change over to a raw diet, your cat’s stool size will be greatly reduced. Stools will become small, firm and void of any offensive odor. If your cats stool is soft or loose as a result of the transition, introduce the raw food more slowly.

There is $14.95 shipping surcharge on all frozen raw orders. Please read the following carefully:

Comments about Primal Pet Foods Raw Cat Food:

My cat really really liked this food, but the shipping cost was almost the same as the product with the frozen fee and the 2nd day shipment fee it's not cost effective. He seemed to enjoy it really cold, it was easy to prepare just defrost no smell - he ate every bit! He's about 12 years old and I think I damaged him with the popular canned food. I did a lot of research on how to get him better and the recommendation is raw food. I am really impressed with the Primal Chicken Salmon food it is a really great raw pet food and I wholly recommend it for your cats health. I now am using a freeze dried food that I mix with water-he's still not totally sold on it, but the price is better for me.

Comments about Primal Pet Foods Raw Cat Food:

My two-yr.-old Calico sticks her nose up at any brand, flavor, or consistency of canned choices.; tried this and it's like a magnet: she cries for it at mealtimes.
My Sidney gets it twice daily as a treat (or so he thinks), when actually I've partially reconstituted it via syringe with his liquid medicine.
Great product but just too expensive.

Comments about Primal Pet Foods Raw Cat Food:

I take out 3 pellets each in the AM & the PM. I leave them on the counter in a dish for a few minutes, and then I cut them up partially frozen. My kitty seems to like them cold. I had been feeding him one of the "popular" pate cat foods - and sometimes I would open up a can & the smell was so horribly rancid, I would toss the whole can in the trash because bad smell. (I think I was poisoning him!) The Primal has no odor and is so easy to give. The only bad thing is the shipping, we live in South Louisiana so I have been paying $23 for 2nd day delivery and there is an an additional $14.95 charge for frozen shipping $37.95!!. I've been ordering two at a time to save money. Great product! My kitty licks the plate clean each and every time time - he didn't clean the plate with the "popular" cat food.

Comments about Primal Pet Foods Raw Cat Food:

My poor cat had vomitted not too frequently and has eaten the same poor quality dry kibble for 11.5 years. This last month, she had been throwing up every time she ate. I tried holistic kibble, she threw that up. So I tried holistic wet, canned food. She even threw that up. The third food is a charm! I feed her freeze dried turkey flavor. She not only likes it, she is not throwing up! Her coat is softer. I was so worried. I didn't know if this was a serious disease or what? I am so pleased with this product. Thank you to whoever manufactures this food. It is expensive, but so well worth the cost. Animals need to eat nutritious food, too!

Comments about Primal Pet Foods Raw Cat Food:

I found a kitten at 4 weeks old, he was flea infested and had worms as well. Throughout his first few months he had frequent urinary tract infections and blood stool. Even the prescription cat food and probiotic never really "cured" him. The vet also began to discuss surgery options! Within a couple of days of switching over, his energy was up and stools were normal! After 4 months of primal pet food he has experienced no more urinary infections! The price is a little high, but considering the alternatives it's 110% worth it.

Comments about Primal Pet Foods Raw Cat Food:

I love this food! I can't advocate feed raw enough. My 10 month old cat could stomach any good. I tried everything from Weruva canned to ZiwiPeak canned and this is the only cat food that he digests extreamly well. He had six months of vet visits and diarrhea and switching him to primal raw changed his bathroom visits forever. I highly recommend this food.

I feed only raw food to my 2 year old cat and he is the healthiest, most robust cat I've ever had. This is one of the best brands of raw frozen high quality cat food. The nuggets are a perfect size so you can thaw the exact amount you need each day.

After trying numerous novel proteins that my IBD cat would refuse, we found Raw Rabbit which really turned him around and he started gaining weight. The food is pricey, but well worth it for a healthy cat. Biggest problem is remembering to put some in the fridge from the freezer to defrost at least a day before.

Comments about Primal Pet Foods Raw Cat Food:

We switched over our cats to this food after one of our cats kept getting chronic UTIs due to the lack of hydration in his diet. Since we have switched over almost all of their health problems (UTI, vomiting, hairballs, loose stools) have disappeared. We have an elderly cat (~13-15years old) and an FIV+ cat and both of them have responded well! I would highly recommend this food, even if you can't afford to feed this to them at every meal.

Comments about Primal Pet Foods Raw Cat Food:

I have 1 over-weight cat and 1 lean cat. I have tried many dry cat foods that claim to be high-protein--the latest was Blue Buffalo--but when I saw potato starch as the 4th ingredient, I decided to abandon dry food and try something closer to what nature intended for cats. 1 cat should weigh 10 lbs(but she weighs 16!) and the other should weigh 12-13 lbs and he weighs 11.6. So far no weight changes for either cat, but I imagine unless I can separate them, I won't see any changes. That's the next challenge.
