Feeding Recommendations

  • As a result of the increased digestibility of a raw food diet, you are able to feed your cat less food daily.
  • *Feed your pet 2-3% of their body weight daily.
  • Primal recommends feeding your cat twice daily, so you should divide the total daily feeding weight in half and feed once in the morning and once in the evening.
  • Factors such as level of activity, age, health, metabolism, and breed play a part in the necessary feeding quantities of all animals.
  • Please be sure to monitor your cats dietary needs and adjust the feeding quantities accordingly.

Feeding Percentages

  • 2.0% Weight loss or non-active cats
  • 2.5% Maintain Weight
  • 3.0% Slight Weight Gain
  • 3.5% Significant Weight Gain
  • 4.0% Kittens (8 wks - 1 yr)
  • 4.5% - 8.0% Kittens (4 wks - 8 wks)*

Calculation Tips
Weigh your cat on a regular basis so you know that you are feeding the correct amount of food. Kittens: Primal recommends starting your kitten’s feeding percentage at 6% and adjusting up or down as necessary.

Transitioning Your Cat to Primal Raw

Transition is the most essential element of a healthy and safe change from dry kibble or canned wet food to a raw diet. Primal recommends making this transition slowly. Allow 1-4 weeks for your pet’s digestive system to properly adjust from a highly processed diet to their new diet of human grade raw foods.

Begin by mixing the Feline Formula into your cats previous food at a ratio that your cat will tolerate (you can start with as little as 1/4 Feline Formula to 3/4 of your pet’s former food). Your cat may show some adversity to the temperature of the raw food when served directly from the refrigerator. To warm Primal Pet Foods formulas, place the feeding portion into a zipper-seal, water-tight bag and heat in a bowl of warm water. Do not use water that is too hot, as this will potentially cook the food and reduce the enzymatic properties, as well as deplete the nutrient values of the raw foods.

Gradually increase the amount of Feline Formula until your cat accepts the raw diet without the addition of any kibble or canned food.

Due to the finicky nature of felines, transitioning to a raw food diet can be challenging. If after following Primal's recommended transition guidelines above, you are still unable to entice your cat to eat raw food, you may want to consider two other possible methods. Mix equal parts of Primal Feline Formulas with a very high quality canned food at a ratio of 50/50. After your cat begins to eat the mixture, you can gradually decrease the amount of canned food used and begin to feed a greater quantity of Primal Feline Formulas. The second option is to fast your cat for a brief period of time, usually no more than two days. Be sure to offer plenty of fresh water during the fast and attempt to feed raw food after day 1 of the fast.

Primal recommends the addition of digestive enzymes for the first two to four weeks of the transition period to better enable your cat to assimilate the proteins, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals contained in our formulas. To determine how your cat’s system is accepting the new diet, monitor their stool. As you change over to a raw diet, your cat’s stool size will be greatly reduced. Stools will become small, firm and void of any offensive odor. If your cats stool is soft or loose as a result of the transition, introduce the raw food more slowly.

There is a 4 pound minimum and $9.95 shipping surcharge on all frozen raw food and bones orders. Additional charges may apply for air express service or very large orders. Please read the following carefully:

  • Special Packaging - All raw food and bones are shipped frozen in special styrofoam-lined boxes with dry ice. The shipping surcharge is to cover the cost of the dry ice and special packaging.
  • Tuesday Shipping - All frozen raw orders will ship Tuesday. To ensure that we have adequate stock to fill your order, you must place your order by midnight Sunday. Orders placed on Monday or later will ship the following Tuesday.
  • FedEx Ground Service - The least expensive shipping method is FedEx Ground Service. Delivery time frames vary depending on the state shipped to, but in most cases your delivery will be on Friday or Saturday. Please click here to view a map showing the number of days to your location. If you are in the 4 day delivery area (green area on the map) then your order will arrive on a Saturday. We strongly recommend upgrading to an express delivery service (see below) if you will not be available to receive your order and place it in the freezer at the time of delivery (we cannot offer refunds or reships on thawed food that is not received by a person at the time of delivery).
  • FedEx Express Service - We do offer Overnight, 2 Day, and 3 Day service. We encourage you to choose one of these express services if you are unable to personally receive your food at the time of delivery, which may include Saturday. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico must use 2 Day or Overnight Delivery. We cannot offer refunds or reships on thawed food that is not signed for by a person at the time of delivery.
  • Multiple Box Surcharge - Some orders weighing over 20 pounds must be shipped in more than one box and will be subject to additional shipping surcharges. Not all orders over 20 pounds will need to be sent in multiple boxes, and if this applies to your order we will notify you before processing it so that you can make adjustments if desired. In general, bones, medallions, and patties tend to take more room. As a guideline, the maximum a box will hold of each type of food is 34 x 1 lb. chubs or 8 x 3 lb. medallions or 6 x 6 lb. patties or 2 x 25 lb. boxes of dinner bars.
  • Delivery Instructions - Please ship to an address where someone will be available to accept the order. If this is not possible, please leave a note for the FedEx delivery person on the scheduled day of delivery with instructions on where to leave it (that is not in the hot sun). The food will only stay frozen for up to 4 days from shipment, so if it is not able to be delivered or it sits outside after delivery, there is a possibility that the food will begin to thaw. We cannot accept returns or offer refunds or reships for orders that are unable to be delivered or that are not signed for by a person at the time of delivery. We are unable to send frozen raw food orders with "Shipper Release," so please leave your delivery driver a note if you think they will not leave the package with no one home.

SEPARATE RAW FOOD ORDERS - If you are ordering both frozen raw food or bones and other, non-frozen items, you will need to place two separate orders. This will prevent the non-frozen items from being delayed until Tuesday and from being subject to extra shipping charges.

Comments about Primal Pet Foods Raw Cat Food:

Our almost five year old Cornish Rex cat has tried other raw frozen brands but after we moved to a new part of the country, she developed minor skin irritations. We couldn't buy this brand easily in our new location but we went out of our way to order it and have it shipped to us because it cleared up her skin problems and she really loves it.

We notice that she is in much better shape when she gets it for one of her two daily meals, as well as the added bonus that she has less waste in her litter box when eating this food regularly. She doesn't throw up as often as when she eats other kinds of food. In particular, the formulas with salmon seem to do wonders for her coat and health.

Also, compared to other brands, it's actually quite a good price for the quality of the food.

Comments about Primal Pet Foods Raw Cat Food:

It is so convenient to have this food in little blocks. The last raw food we purchased (elsewhere) was in a big frozen blob. It took a while for my cat to accept it, but now she seems to like it very much. great packaging - even in hot weather it did not thaw at all. i paid extra for one day shipping which was very expensive because of the hot weather. I don't think it would have been necessary. *IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO WITH THE BOX AND STYROFOME CONTAINER? CAN YOU REUSE IT?*

[...]. I have two older cats, one with beginning kidney disease, the other with urinary issues. They look better, eat better and have actually gained weight! I am impressed! Well worth the effort to get it!

I am trying different manufacturer's of the frozen raw foods. My cat likes this one. His coat is soft and shiny and he is not having digestive issues anymore. When i used this with dry food he had diarrhea all the time. it may have been the dry food i chose or this particular combination. i say that because there was never an issue with other frozen foods i tried and the dry food i was using.

Comments about Primal Pet Foods Raw Cat Food:

We returned from Australia in '07 with a cat that seems to be allergic to most dry and wet foods. He was on Roo (kangaroo) meat in Oz - no antibotics, etc. His food allergies immediately resurfaced when he landed here, until I discovered Primal Raw Cat Food. He, and his 18 1/2 year old sister, get the Chicken/Salmon nuggets along with an organic dry food; and they are both thriving.

My 3 indoor cats have been on Primal for over a year. All of the health issues we had been struggling with went away - Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Herpes (managed with Lysine too), allergies, chronic ear infections, hairballs. My boys are lean and active with beautiful coats. They shed much less and there is no odor coming from the litterbox. These are the happiest, healthiest cats I've ever seen. Primal is easy to use and worth every penny!!

Comments about Primal Pet Foods Raw Cat Food:

My 2 indoor cats have owned me for 12 years. I've fed them everything under the sun. They continued to remain slightly overweight, experience hairballs, chin acne, and once even a severe urinary tract infection. One of my cats used to lick her belly constantly until all of the fur was gone, (a sign of allergy or pain). I was so worried! The vets' recommendations weren't helping. Some months ago, I switched them to Primal brand raw cat food. Not only do they love the taste, but all of their medical issues have disappeared! The fur on my cat's stomach has returned and she no longer licks it. My cats have energy. They no longer have a hairball issue. I can't believe it took me 12 years to realize the tremendous benefits of a healthy raw food diet. Just like humans' food; we shouldn't eat such little protein and so much grain...cats' diets are the same way.
