Diet for a Dog with
Struvite Crystals and Kidney Stones

Hello, I have a dog who gets crystals and stones in its kidneys. The Vet has put her on a perscription food called c/d. I was told that it is due to the ash levels in food that result in the kidney problems. Are there any non perscription foods that I can buy for my dog that would be safe?

Yes, you have alternatives to feeding Hill’s Prescription Diet C/d to your dog. First, if you are feeding C/d for struvite crystals and stones, you might just confirm that they are gone with a urinalysis, xrays, and/or ultrasound of the kidneys and urinary bladder. If so, then it should be alright to change the diet- C/d does not prevent formation of struvites since struvites are associated with urinary tract infection in the dog. Therefore, it is important to have your dog’s urine cultured to identify any infection and to find the correct antibiotic and treat for the appropriate amount of time if indicated.

A good quality holistic diet is the key to good health. I would recommend natural diets, such as, Wellness, Merrick, Innova, Nature’s Variety, Newman’s Own, and others. Cranberry extract and certain herbs, that are found in products such as Solid Gold Berry Balance and Only Natural Pet Cranberry Wellness can be very helpful in controlling infections and urinary pH. Also, make sure to give essential fatty acids EPA/DHA as in Vetri Science Omega 3,6,9; a good source of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) as found in products like Glycoflex or Only Natural Pet Lubri-Ease to support healthy urinary tract membranes; and probiotics such as NF Spectra, increasing the probiotics when antibiotics are required to eliminate infection.

Always have your dog’s urine tested regularly to monitor for crystals and pH.
